Suggestions in the 1k and lower segment for desktop synths:

Agressive can be done also by an ARP or ARP clone (Odyssey or 2600)
What about the Korg Minilogue series?
Really aggressive is also domain of wavetable synths, but those are not analogue. For small budget there was always the Waldorf Blofeld, or more expensive the ASM Hydrasynth … just saying

I would say for a raw traxs type sound I found that the 0ctrl sequencer is amazing, +the semi modular of your choice and you are off to the races. On a budget maybe go for taiga, no budget I would say look into cascadia.

+1 for Matriarch. It can have a very distinctive sound, but is also very flexible. A Bandcamp artist named KNIV did some nice solo albums with the Matri.

Edit: Oops, I see I’ve blown the budget. It would be interesting to try making an album with the Grandmother; not sure if it’s as edgy as what the OP needs.

An Odyssey clone could work. The Korg version is a little hard-sounding, might fit.

It’s a decent synth and MK1 prices have come down to pretty reasonable levels now the (frankly horrible to look at) MK2 is out.

I agree. The only thing I liked the look of in the mk2 is the drive, but I’ve plenty of FX to deal with that. A lot of the 2.0 firmware features don’t really interest me much either and seem to make the synth over complicated to me. Plus I got a good price on the mk1.

I wouldn’t characterize the Mono as “aggressive” but it can get FM-gnarly, has a wide range, the sequencer is immense fun, and not only is mk1 a bargain right now, I don’t see a reason to prefer mk2 to it.

Would go Grandmother if I had to pick only one. It’s damn good as a sound processor as well (plug a drum machine to the line in, tweak the filter and add a tiny bit of spring reverb = be happy).

The Norand was a great choice, it’s even in one of Surgeon’s live setups atm so pretty close to your request albeit different generation of Surgeon. Tbh it gets pretty aggressive as is but if you have a Sherman Filterbank you can run it though, fuck me they pair beautifully. The playability of it though, wow it’s a ridiculously fun and satisfying synth to just piss about with.
