hi guys … I have a question because my eyes hurt!

which monitor do you use?

I need a new monitor that is gentle on my eyes …long story short, did you go through the jungle and came up with a decent “expensive” monitor , and you really felt / saw a difference?

I wanna go for a flicker free 27" …

I had 2 Samsung monitors. Swapped them out for 2 Asus monitors which were slightly larger.
My eyes were sore and streaming for nearly a week before I found some comfortable settings. Plus the colours are a bit fake.

I found Samsung to be very comfortable for hours of work right out of the box. With no messing around.The colour isn’t as bright as the Asus but it is much more realistic.

I regret getting rid of mine.

Can i turn off my laptop’s screen while the monitor is on??

I would think about that option because i need big screen…

You can with most laptops Ive come across. Usually a setting in the bios. ‘which display to initialise’ or something like that. Some laptops shut the screen off automatically when you plug in a second display. You should also be able to use both screens at the same time.(dual screen setup).

Here’s a great website to find a list of monitors that don’t use PWM for dimming. PWM flickers the LED or Flourescent backlight at a rate barely perceptible, which causes the screen to appear dimmer. This causes extreme eye fatigue and possibly even neurological and nervous system issues.

Most monitors that use PWM can have the PWM bypassed by turning the backlight up to 100%. You might then have to lower the contrast quite a lot to make it a usable display. You can easily test how much your monitor is using PWM with a cheap camera phone. They generally show the flickering very easily.

Also something to watch out for is the color temperature. Blue LED light is particularity bad for the retina and can cause eye damage and most monitors default to a very blue light, something like 9300k. Try to lower your color temperature to a more neutral temp, I would recommend the industry stand D65 (6500k). This is what the film industry uses.

My brother had the Dell U27I3 and it was a beautiful monitor with no PWM flickering (I tested it).

Yep I use the Dell U2713HM @ 2560x1440 as my main monitor. Really nice!

Another great feature of the Ultrasharps is the wide range of adjustment for height and angle.

most certainly YES … a big screen will change your life! … do yourself a favour and get a decent expensive one … watching a movie on couch with color shift is no fun! … sitting infront of a too bright display (PWM dimming flickering) is killing me right now …
also, imagine : your lappy is always closed, connected to a big screen… you never turn it off, just let it hibernate … when you move the mouse it wakes up … this way you dont have to open the lid when powering it on (geek yay)

thanks for posting that link … i just recently , 3 days ago, stumbled across that very website AND the PWM issue … cant believe what I was reading …
now looking into monitors … it has to be at least 27 " … a decent DELL would be at leat twice my rent … sigh …
also the better the color the lesser the response time … I am a casual gamer …
anyways … you telling me his causes extreme eye fatigue and possibly even neurological and nervous system issues. Freaks me out!

A couple of months back I got a nice 22" LCD HP monitor for $30 off of Craigslist. I think it was around $500 when it came out in 2008, and it is sharp and works just fine for my needs. A DVI to Minidisplayport adaptor to my MBP, and I never have to touch my laptop and have a crisp display that gives me tons of screen real estate.

Unlike musical equipment, computer hardware loses a ton of value as soon as it leaves a retail store. Unless you really need the newest model, I think there are some stupidly cheap options available used. Maybe if I’d hunted more I could have found a larger and newer display for a bit more money, but for what I spent and how good it looks I have no complaints, and working on the computer is infinitely more enjoyable than squinting at my 13" MBP.

Your welcome. It’s one of those things that I think people should know about and it’s a damn shame that so many companies put out products that use PWM without even thinking about the effects it could have on people. Especially in the age of LED’s we live in, it’s the primary method for dimming them, which is rather unfortunate. OLEDs don’t seem to use PWM as far as I know so the next generation of screens should be better, and some LED’s don’t use PWM flickering which makes that website a useful resource to have.

thanks for the tip … i have no mac however … but, since I already posted another thread here, about decreasing white flashes when loading new tabs …
going for mac with the option to invert the colors on a (deep) system level would help me achieve that … no more white … hmmmm …

hi accent … i am happy for you that you found a decent and continuously working 22 " … what an upgrade from a 13" …

but i need my screen to watch movies from couch AND sit infront of it to read the internet …

at the same time I have gigantic windows facing west and the screen is positioned oppsosite of the windows …

hence, I need a BIG screen, at least 27" … and these ones are expensive, and they are rare on the second hand market …and still expensive second hand, and andnadndnanand …
