I have just started .
But it is so expensive, its hard to find anything under $200 (in Aus).
Iv’e found some diy stuff which helps to keep the cost down a bit.

I agree modular, in particular eurorack, is booming right now, but I don’t think it’s a fad. I think it’s more of an evolution even though modular has been around forever. It’s also still relatively cost prohibitive. That being said, it’s unbelievably satisfying to work in such a hands on fashion. I love it!

been doing the eurorack thing for a year and half now… it just started to really click with me the past 8 months and I’m getting the things out of it that i want, but i’m now starting to downsize… i find myself not really producing as effectively as i did before…

but with a smaller system… i’m less distracted and more productive.

that being said… if anyone is getting into it – i’d say stay small and don’t let it pull you in too far.

that being said… i’m much more capable at synthesizing sounds on my A4 after having everything broken down for me to it’s fundamental elements in the modular realm… a real learning experience.

I believe the appeal for a lot people is simply the look of a modular system - all those knobs, switches, lights, and cables. But going by the glut of absolute shit modular jams I see being posted on YouTube, a lot of those people will eventually grow tired of making electro fart sounds, and sell their systems for something less abstract and demanding.

For me its a matter of it just sounds better. Because an oscillator is just being an osc means it stands or falls on how well it does it.

Theres a Cwejman SkI for salw for $2600 and I can assure you it would be the best synth money you could spend.

Theres modules now bridging midi and cv so all our shitty old controllers can be reborn again

The BEST bang for buck are the Frequency Central DIY modules. The filter costs about $60-$80 max max and sells for high 200’s

I’m thinking 2017 will be the year I can finally get into modular, as the fad will start to pass and it will become more ubiquitous. Financially, it is still a pipe dream for me, but as it keeps catching on and people keep dropping in and out of the market, I think it may actually start to become reasonable in a few years, at least for used Eurorack.

I hope so, anyhow. A big thing for my interest in making electronic music was the idea of never doing the same thing twice (coming as a guitarist in bands where you’re constantly trying to recreate a performance), and modular is basically the epitome of that aesthetic. It’s a big reason why Elektron gear appeals to me, but full-on modular is the end-all for throwing caution to the wind. Even if I cannot fathom diving in now, I hope it grows and dies out in a few years so I can afford to build a personalized system on the cheap once the beard-stokers move on.

Dogma, I have two Anushri’s (euro), a 4x mixer, a Synthrotek VCA, and just got a Peaks . I’m thinking maybe build like an effects sytem as the Anushri’s cover alot ( vco,filter,sequencer,midi to cv etc…) and I’ll try to keep it small.

I have been into modulars for about 2 years. Euro is definitely the trendiest format but it also has a lot of innovation happening. Due to that and the lower cost of entry, it has been booming.for awhile.

Personally, I left Euro because there was always so much new GAS inducing stuff being released, I just wanted more and more. I also found the format a little too small, it was hard to not bump other knobs, plus there are some standards lacking- (power, amount of CV to trigger some modules is different, etc).

Now I have a couple panels of Serge, I have been really happy but lately I have thought about Euro again…because all of the innovation. I enjoy patching on my Serge more than I did on Euro (Banana Cables Rule!), I like the liveliness of the sound, the main downer is the price and that modules are bought by the panel.

Modulars aren’t going anywhere, the danger is that a lot of not very modular modules are being produced.

This is a really great way to think about it. I got into eurorack to build and extra voice for the A4 and started small and I love it. It is easy to get GAS and I can see how people spend thousands and thousands getting insane racks but my experience has been the opposite. I haven’t even finished my Happy Ending Kit and am learning each module in and out before deciding what I want next to get the sound or function I want. It has opened my way of thinking to synthesis in general and I’ve actually become so much more proficient with my A4 than ever. I just see Euro as another tool to make some tunes and have fun with, no different than all the other gear lust out there.
