Have tried to integrate Model:Samples…AND Cycles…(together …in series)
…into my DAW chain…for too long…with no joy
knocked my head up against all the settings more than once…
Is there a DEFINITIVE set of settings for either machine…(samples /cycles)
that gets a midi signal through it ?
Im sure Ive complicated the situation
by trying to integrate both modules into my setup…
But for the life of me ! …It seems like Ive tried every possible set of combinations of settings..that exist !..within these 2 modules... Just to try and get some midi...recorded into my sequence...to play back out and through ..to the piano it was played on !! ? Im sure I`m just overlooking something…
and dont want to come off as too indignant…
.but would really appreciate some guidance
How are you connecting your Elektron gear to the computer?

I have re-checked these connections …to make sure I have them right
Also Have both USB connections from Sample & Cycles activeBeen working on it today…took the model:cycles …Out…of the setup just to simplify things…still cannot get midi thru back to the keyboard…
Mout is checked on all 6 pads (not even quite sure its required)
Midi Sync set to all ‘On’
Midi In and Out ports set to defaults
Midi Ports set to ‘Thru’
Midi Filter …‘Rcv Notes’ set to ‘OFF’ (otherwise I do end up playing the unit with my Kybd) ‘Rcv CC’ set to on …and ENCS set to ‘I & E’
So what am I missing ?
I have the same problem when I try to use my M:S as MIDI thru. I send MIDI over USB from Ableton to M:S. I set M:S to receive MIDI over USB and to act as Midi thru over the Midi out port. However, no Midi is passed thru.
For now I connect my Behringer TD3 over USB as it can send the Midi thru perfectly. Exact same setup only with M:S swapped for TD3 works perfectly. I have spend hours trying to figure it out and dig in thé manual.
For me… to describe the problem another way…
I`ll most often use a classic “daisy chain” midi configuration…
.in instrument setups
so…that one instrument /device after another …connected in a midi line…
and when they all support midi thru…
the signal reaches its original departure point…
so it plays back what it sent …
I havent been able to put Model:Samples in that chain
and still maintain Midi Thru…
not saying its elektrons fault…
just trying to solve a problem…

Are you both switching the out port to Thru? If it isn’t passing Thru, it must be set to Out on your machines. If that’s not the case and you do have it set to Thru, make sure you have M+U set for midi receive/send*, because it sounds like both of you are using a combination of USB and Midi.

No elektron boxes function as a usb midi to din midi interface. The usb midi is not pushed through to the din midi ports.
What about midi to midi ?

and one specifically labled "out/thru" ? (albiet via an 1/8 in plug)
why would it be labled that if it doesn`t assume those typical midi out/thru functions ?

But I didn`t think I was trying to go USB midi...
all the rest of my system has dedicated midi ports...
Are you saying that the midi ins and outs are usb midi ?
There`s a midi port on each unit labled "out/thru"
Why else would it be labled that ?
What other function would "thru" serve ?are you not using usb midi to go from computer to model:samples?
Model:Samples and Model:Cycles each have: both USB AND Midi connections
they have both “midi in” and a port labeled “midi out/thru”
and right now I`m using both …or attempting to…without much luck
The midi connections are routed to my midi interface…and “daisy chained” to my keyboard and a Roland “sound canvas”…but the midi signal (so far) doesn`t make the round trip…despite the “Thru” port on the Elektron Box
In your midi port settings, do you have it set to Thru? By default it is set to Out, you have to set it to Thru. The 5 pin won’t automatically do Thru without changing the settings on the Cycles and Samples.
So which are you using to send midi to the model:samples usb or din midi? . As I stated before no elektron box functions as a usb midi to din midi interface. So if you are sending usb midi from the computer into the model:samples it will not go through to the din midi ports.
Please post your specific routing so we can be as helpful as possible.
@jefones gave the definitive answer here: MIDI sent into the m:s via its USB port will never be routed to the out/thru port. Only data sent into the m:s via the MIDI IN port will be sent to the Out/Thru. Per the manual:
If the MIDI OUT/THRU port is set to function as THRU, it duplicates the data arriving at the MIDI IN port, so it can be used for chaining MIDI units together.
And I have just verified this myself.
Just to tack onto this thread. Am I right I’m assuming that if midi clock and transport is sent from Ableton Live over USB midi to either M:S or M:C, I can still send clock and transport over DIN midi from a Models to an Octatrack to keep everything synced up? I.e., no midi notes or CCs (which doesn’t work, as mentioned above) but just clock and transport?

The answer was the little thought of setting in Midi settings ‘“ports”
“output polarity” ( out pol )…
to change it from ‘STD’ to "INV’ (inverted)
was all it took
just a matter of the 2 ways ‘1/8 in to DIN’… are wired
who knew !?..felt like a friggin medical mystery !
and BTW…dont think it matters if you have both usb and midi …hooked up
plugged the usb back in…still good to go…
