Model:Cycles Tips & Tricks Thread

Amazing, thank you!

A question for the community:
Is there any way to reset all the patterns in a project to their saved state?

In a performance situation I’ll work through a fair few patterns and royally mash them up as I go (messing with knobs, motion recording, some temp saves along the way etc etc).

At the end of the jam I want to ‘reset’ the cycles to the saved state so I can start again.

It’s cumbersome to go back through every pattern and ‘reload pattern’.

I tried switching off and back on but the cycles seems to remember the current state.

Is there a workflow reason why you wouldn’t want to reload at the Project level?

12.2 in the manual.

You can load the project again, without saving it, which effectively will reset all of its patterns. UNLESS you’ve saved the project somewhere in-between those mashups.

something that’s riskier but can also work in a pinch is to unplug it while still powered on, and so long as you saved your project before performing, it should just reset to that save state

… your method is much better and much safer though!!!

Not really a trick but a fun way to get modular sounding stuff out of the Model:Cycles:

-put trigs on every step for every track
-set every track to 4 bars length
-record multiple random knob tweakings on every track
-put chance to 6% or adjust to your liking
-add some panning, reverb, delay lfo’s to the tracks

And something like this comes out:

I love randomness, especially to frame it and control it for a completely different purpose, suddenly a personality of the machine appears.

This is probably common knowledge, but it was a surprise to me.

I didn’t realize quite how the “track setup → pad” control could be used for performance with the sequencer. Honestly, I just assumed it controlled the pad and the sequencing was independent. Nope!

Let’s say the pad is set to C4.

Program a simple sequence, maybe:
C4 - G4 - C4 - A#4

If you change the pad setting it will change the sequence, but only the C4 trigs. So, make it D4 and you’d get:

D4 - G4 - D4 - A#4

That works with the internal instruments or with MIDI out.

That’s a simple example, but you can use that during playback to constantly tweak the trigs that were on the pad pitch. Tons of fun.

Woah. Did not know this. Thanks for sharing. Definitely going to play with this later.

Here’s a simple track showing the effect. Just the M:C and a drum track. The same 16 step loop throughout, so all the pitch changes are through the Track Setup → Pad knob. Because I get bored, by the end I’m playing around with making a loop and then tweaking the sounds on the M:C. Fun!

This is great. I notice that for this to work, you have to make sure the screen shows the very top level menu – if you’re inside some menu, then the data encoder just changes whatever value is displayed. (Might be obvious, sorry)

it doesn’t do this on mine. changing the pad key doesn’t affect my sequences. is there a trick to it?

hmmn it works on trigs added with grid mode, but leaves anything live recorded i think

Good catch. I’ve only tried it with programmed (not live recorded) trigs.

I have done this several time, but the sound palatte is very limited, you come up always with the same results, sound wise.

I think this technique would get better sound results with a model samples.

Yeah, kind of like modular.

But i definitely agree. On the Model Samples the sound palette is endless.
What i like about the cycles is that i’m bound to these 6 specific machines and have to get creative to find the gems. Though i admit it’s also very annoying sometimes.

Any clue whether Elektron is planning to release an update to the firmware anytime before the device stops being sold? After the advent of the EP-166, and especially since TE recently released an update for it which basically addresses almost every complaint users had about the device, I find it strange that Elektron is not stepping up their game in that market segment. Yes, I know, those are different devices and the model:samples is perhaps a better term of comparison, but you get my point. There is definitely untapped potential in this little box, and if Elektron is not planning on making it better, then they should maybe open source the firmware so that the community can do it…

Set expectations for never, and if anything changes there, great.

Also do not expect this.

Just use it, it isn’t broken.

I’ve put up a fair amount of performances on YouTube using the Model Cycles over the years. I’ve had several requests to put up a tutorial on how I work with it.
Making tutorial videos is much harder than I anticipated and I tried several times only to shelve them 1/2 or more of the way through.
Anyway, I finally spent some time and put up a video of the top 6 things I do when making music with the MC.
If you are interested, you can find it here (there might actually be some useful info in there  )

Man, thanks for this video. It´s gold. I love my cycles and know the most of the tips stuff. But now i know even more :+1:  Never thought about saving the pan to a preset. Such a superb tip! Left you a like on your channel.
