Mod Duo X - thoughts?

Seems they’ve had some success with a new round of investment

Let’s see what happens after they send their MOD dwarf to backers. I was disappointed by the DuoX and ended up returning it. Issues I found:

  • Screens were terrible. They look nothing like the screenshots irl. They’re very dim and uneven
  • Device is unnecessary heavy. They are built this way to save costs
  • CV wasn’t working as advertised, notably the range
  • Open Source synths available from the store can’t use presets released on other platform. They have to be converted.

Just acquired one of these very cheap because there is an issue with the Out 1 and Out 2 not having any effects on them. Headphone output works as expected though.

I have pinpointed the issue to most likely being related to the hardware bypass relays, and that they are stuck in hardware bypass mode.
The hardware bypasses should automatically switch off as soon as the device has booted up and loaded a pedalboard. But in my case the relays doesn’t seem to switch off/trigger. There should be a hearable click when the Omron G6S-2F relays engage/disengage. But I cannot hear anything from these, so that’s why I suspect something related to these.

So I thought I’d ask here if anyone have any ideas how to troubleshoot this further? Do you reckon replacing the relays are enough, or are perhaps the relays still working but there are some broken capacitors inside that needs replacing? Or could this be a bigger issue?

Update: It all sorted it self out on its own. I noticed that the seller had sent me an underpowered power supply with the correct voltage, but too little amps. Switching to a better power supply made the relays start acting as intended again. So happy sailing again.

What I wonder is why the Mod Duo X isn’t more popular than it is. It is really a beast and I’m really wondering why it doesn’t seem to be more sought after.

This thread has 24 replies now and Poly Beebo and Zoia has huge huge amounts more. Even though Mod Duo X is directly comparable and even far ahead on few functions.

Benn Jordan making an open source guitar pedal with mod duo software.
He’s using a $50 rasp pi 5 and a sound card … it seems about 4x the power of the mod duo he used years ago

It sounded good and seemed very flexible . I haven’t turned on my zoia yet .

It might be related to combination of price and availability. And maybe the PC editor is a show-stopper for someone. Beebo and Zoia are directly programmable. If it had an actual patching screen, it would be the winner, yeah.

Yeah, I hear you. To me it’s quite the opposite. Had the Beebo but found patching om the device itself too fiddly (and sold it later due to the latency and hiss noise). Zoia I haven’t even considered since I get serious OP-Z muscle memory vibes on that one…

I really enjoy patching in the browser and on a big screen and only have the performance parts available once unplugged from PC. It is really aiming to be performance device, which is exactly what I’m looking for.
