Mix digitakt help

helps internal digitakt mix. well I’ve been with this giant toy for a long time and love it too much. this is what happens. I use the digitakt for tr1 kick, tr2 snare, tr3 ambience, tr4 claps or percussion sequences, tr5 some ride, tr6 hhcl, tr7 another varied clhh, tr8 crash or noise start in step 1. the question is how to improve the mix? the sounds sound super strange to me sometimes, a little dirty. not what happens but my kick sometimes loses presence or my hihats are not found. I need mixing tips in the digitakt (I use a lot of reverb and delays)

If you use lots of reverb, that pushes your sound back into the mix. Delay may muddle things as well.

Mixing is definitely a skill. There’s a mix page available (Func + LFO twice. Page 1 is the master compressor and Page 2 is the mix page). The compressor could also help make things a bit punchier/tighter but you need to read up on how compressors work and how to use.

For the mix, as a suggestion is bring everything down to 0 and start with the kick. Bring it up to 100. Then bring in each element until its sitting where you like it. You’ll get a pretty decent mix this way where everything isn’t fighting for space. Your samples also may occupy similar frequencies which cause buildup in these areas. The DT does not have any EQ (only high pass/low pass filters) so if you need to notch anything out, outside of resampling you’ll need to do this in a DAW.

Here are some tips that helped me:
1- shelve samples before you load them into the DT, mostly I will eq out the bass from samples that don’t need it as that can quickly make the mix muddy
2- Shelve the bass from the Reverb and Delay, you usually don’t want reverb and delay on bass
3- Relative volumes between tracks can make a huge difference, choose what elements need to be upfront and those that can be more in the background
