absolutely losing my patience with the billing department of my university. its been over a month since i started contacting them about the issue and i have only received two actual responses, both of which were less than ten words total. they have said they will fix the problem but only seem to know how to do it incredibly slowly, missing large aspects of the problem, and then entirely ignoring further communication. if they dont figure this out soon enough the problem is going to get even more annoying and complicated because i will be overcharged automatically and i cant prevent it.
but when i owed them $5k out of pocket, oh boy were they on top of that.

Smoke alarm went off at 3am. Changed the battery. Went off again 20 minutes later. Pulled the battery out and held the button to reset it. It went off half an hour later. Next step was to remove it from the wires in the ceiling so I can completely discharge the capacitor, but I’m too short even with our step ladder to be able to see to remove the detector from the wires. So I had to turn off the breaker to the bedroom… at which point I discovered that the diagram in the breaker box is either incomplete or flat out wrong. Basically had to shut off almost every circuit in my apartment to find the damn one that controls the bedroom ceiling, during which I also discovered that the circuit labeled “bedroom” also controls half of our living room.
Finally discharged the capacitor, took like 30 seconds and even with earplugs it was almost painfully loud. Whoever installed this thing wasn’t playing around. Whoever wired up my apartment in the 70s (I assume that’s when it was built) can go to hell.

That blows! Usually lights and smoke detectors are on separate breakers. It makes sense if you think about it. If you pop a breaker due to an overloaded receptacle, you still have lights and fire protection.
All that said, I’m sure the electrical is wired in odd ways if it’s that old, codes were much more lax back then!

Both smoke detectors have been sitting on a shelf somewhere for at least 6 months. Got tired of replacing them batteries… here they’re not wired to the mains at all. Instead they use 3 AA and one 9V batteries…
Good thing the house didn’t catch fire in my sleep yet!

My grandmother-in-law got scammed for the third time in 12 months. First time, a spam caller got her to install a remote takeover on her computer. Then she got her cashapp account hacked and lost most of her checking acct (and only recovered half because they bank wouldn’t verify all the charges as fraudulent). Then in trying to recover the rest of her money, she called some random number on google and got scammed out of $100
She’s getting a brand new bank account to staunch the bleeding, and I’m getting her to reset all her passwords. (I’d set her up with a password manager, but I’m afraid she’ll just give the master password to some scammmer anyway)

So sorry to hear this. There are so many people out there praying on the elderly and gullible, and there are so many more ways to scam people these days. I’ve had to deal with some of this, at a lesser scale, with my own aging parents.
Would she consider empowering a family member to act as her financial POA to help her lock down and monitor her bank accounts and credit cards?
