Midi Woes

Hi,

Just got an OT this weekend and having some problems. Have tried to search the manual and web.

I have my Bass Station II hooked up to midi IN and OUT of the OT.

I can’t record midi notes from the BS2 when not using the “Auto Channel”.

I set BS2 to Midi Ch. 1. and OT Midi Track 1 to Midi Ch. 1.

The OT can trigger the BS2 perfectly - but I can’t record notes into the OT from the BS2 keyboard.

If I change Midi Ch to 16 on the BS2 (which is the auto channel on OT) - then I can record notes.

I’m just going off the top of my head, and I dont have a BS2, but have you tried turning off AutoChannel?

When you start trying to record to the OT are you initiating recording by pressing REC + PLAY, is the record button flashing?

Also this kind of MIDI I/O connected with 2 machines usually requires you to turn off “Local Control” on the BS2, seeing that you want the keyboard going to the OT and the OT to the synth engine, you dont want the Keyboard playing the BS2.

Wouldn’t be a bad idea to do a simple troubleshooting process by only going OUT from the BS2 to the OT. Make sure your cables are working.

Just some thoughts …

Are you grid recording or live recording?

Do you have one of the OT audio tracks set to the same MIDI channel as the OT MIDI track on which you are trying to record notes?

Do you have more than one OT MIDI track set to the same MIDI channel number?

Thanks!
Yes I’m doing live mode recording. Again this works when sending to the auto channel.
Have tried with both Local on and off.
Again this works on the auto channel so not a cable problem.

Live Recording.
Have disabled Note in for Audio in the Midi setup. Is there anywhere else I need to check for Midi regarding the Audio tracks?

No I have only one MIDI track set to Ch. 1

Ok.

On the channels page of MIDI in project. Trigger for Audio Track 1 was set to Midi Channel 1. When setting this to OFF - I can now record in MIDI Notes and CC from the BS2.

I just thought that since in MIDI -> CONTROL I had already remove CC IN and NOTE IN that it would automatically pass through.

Is this the only solution? Or is there something better?

According to the section of the manual (pages 111 to 112) about the MIDI sequencer:

HOW MIDI IS ROUTED
If an audio track and a MIDI track share the same MIDI channel, … the audio track will block the MIDI track from receiving data.

From the section of the manual (page 44) about the TRIG CHANNEL settings:

To avoid unwanted MIDI conflicts when controlling external instruments with the Octatrack MIDI sequencer, the MIDI channels assigned to the audio tracks should preferably not be the same as those assigned to the MIDI tracks.

.

Always use a unique number when adding something midi to the OT.

Start with setting the BS2 to 9 and your midi channel to 9.
