MIDI Setup with Virus TI

Hi

I am running Ableton Live 9 on MBP as master connected to A4 via USB for MIDI in/out.

Now I would also like to connect my Virus TI to the A4 with standard MIDI cables so I can sequence the Virus in Ableton.

Is this possibly ?

Do I use the MIDI out or THRU on the A4 to the Virus ?

I thought it was just as simple as making the Virus listen on MIDI channel 10 (for example) whilst the A4 just uses 1-4 as normal.

Once you plug the Virus TI into your PC with the USB cable it becomes your sound card as well as a MIDI interface. This also means no sound comes out of the analogue outs on the Virus but instead the USB outs.

Hi, Im afraid that is not correct.

The Virus TI can work as a soundcard or Midi interface but you need to select it in order to assign it for it. This is done in the Preferences/Audio (within Ableton).

I own a Virus TI, which I use with the USB for using the Awsome Virus Control Software, and alternatively I use another Soundcard and MIDI interface simultaneously so this is not an issue.

The thing here that many people don´t know, is that Plugging the USB makes the TI even better, you can use Analog Ins and Outs at the same time than the 3 stereo USBs.

How it´s done?..

Let´s say that you have an Init Patch on Slot/Patch One, by default this Sound will be using USB 1 Out.

You can find this by navigating to the tab: Common/Output/Main out, you can see that it says USB 1 L+R… Click on the arrow at the right and start salibating… you can either route the Patch to USB1 LR, USB 2 LR, USB 3 LR… aswel as Out 1 LR, Out 2 LR, Out 3 LR…

So yes you can use all the DigitalUSB connections + the Analog ones… in total 6 stereo audio streams… Incredible usefull for Surround patches or just having your bass and synths in separated channels… etc…

By the way… The analog outs allways sounded better to me!!

As said above, you CAN do what you want using USB.
Why do you need the analog outs? For outboard FX? If that’s the case follow the post above me. If not, why not just use the USB audio ins for both?

might sound a bit strange but capturing the sound from the audio outs with a decent A/D convertor gives a much better sound than just printing the sound from the USB outs. I think the D/A convertors on the Virus are pretty good - 192 khz convertors.
