Hi,
lately i’ve been thinking about getting a second Octatrack mkII to have 8 more stems. At this moment I’m using an external midi controller to send midi info to my trigs. This way i can quickly build up melodies on my tracks.
I know you can slave a second OT but would it be possible to send midi data to the second OT thru the first OT? It’s quite important since i’m losing my MIDI IN on the second OT. If i slave OT2 to OT1 i need to use the midi in.
So:
MIDI CONTROLLER —> sends midi channel 1 ----> OT 1 ------> THRU ------> OT 2 receives midi on channel 1
is this possible?
Thanks guys!
It’s absolutely possible, you just have to make sure that the midi channel(s) you want to send to the second OT is not one that the first OT is configured to respond to.
Edit: I mean, you could do that, but they would both respond to the incoming midi.

Yes i’d hope so. In theory it should work because i would be pressing a trig on OT2 thus assigning the midi input to OT2 at this moment and not to OT1. There would not be an interference of the same midi channel?
So i could work on midi channel 1 with the midi controller, press a key on the midi keyboard… at the same time hold a trig on channel 1 from OT2 and OT2 would accept the midi data? OT 1 would pass the midi data with a THRU cable?
Really would love to be sure before buying a second one but i guess it should be possible one way or another to pass midi THRU OT1 to OT2.
Anyway thanks for the quick response!
Yes, it would do this as long as the first OT is set to pass midi thru data on. You might want to use a different auto channel on the two OTs and switch accordingly to avoid conflicts/odd behaviour.
OT1 midi Out to OT2 midi In should be enough, with midi tracks, no need for midi Thru I think.
I guess you want to sync them.
You didn’t precise if you want to record midi tracks and / or audio tracks.
One thing to remember : for each OT, if an audio track and a midi track share the same channel, the midi track won’t receive midi data.

Hey Sezare,
yes i think this the way because i want to control the AUDIO TRACKS from OT2 with my midi keyboard. It’s in the manual page 41, i think. I should reassign the audiotracks on OT2 from midi channel 9 to 16. Then midi OUT to midi IN probably will do without interference.
Thanks for all the response so far!

Other precision OT1 has to be in midi mode if you want to send your keyboard’s note thru midi OT1 midi out.

Unless you send on a specific midi channel set in midi mode instead of the autochannel, will then send through when on audio side…
