I really hope someone can help me, I’m getting a bit fed up with the OT as of late. I’ve been trying to get a simple setup with only two other pieces of gear - OT, SH-32, Bass Station II. I’d like to use the BSII as an input keyboard, record the note events to whatever MIDI channel I need on the OT, then use the OT to play them back and control them.
I’ve hit a roadblock and can’t seem to prevent the OT from spreading CC controls from the BSII to the SH32. This is creating a lot of problems: when I touch a filter control on the BSII, the SH-32 edits the LFO rate, and when I switch patches on the BSII it changes accordingly on the SH-32.
I’ve tried nearly every possible MIDI setting on the OT to prevent the CC from broadcasting, but there seems to be no way to stop the events. As far as I’m aware, there isn’t a way to turn CC off on the BSII so I’m not sure if I’m out of luck or there is another way to fix this.
How I’m routed:
BSII > MIDI Out
MIDI In > OT >MIDI Out (does thru make more sense here?)
MIDI In > SH-32 > MIDI Thru
MIDI In > BS II
Any help would be GREATLY appreciated. I think what I want to achieve is quite simple enough (or is it?) and the OT manual is not very clear when it comes to its MIDI implementation, especially since the copy I have is I think from version 1.0 or earlier
Your problem here is not really the OT. If you tell it to transmit the midi it receives out on a specific midi channel then that is what it will (and should) do. The correct way to deal with this would be to not send CCs from the Bass Station in the first place, or to tell the receiving synth to ignore incoming CCs. If none of those options are possible I can’t think of anything but a midi filter to remove the unwanted data.
Download latest PDF copy of the OT manual (and doublecheck which OS you are using).
It seems from your description that all your units are set to the same midi channel. Is that the result you are after? Because when you do have that kind of setup in that way, all units will react to whatever commands are sent (from whichever unit earlier in the chain, and you seems to have all connected in a loop so). Is it your wish to have the BSII control the SH-32 as well as having SH-32 basically transmitting back the very same messages to the BSII (that sent those messages)?
What unit do you want to use to control another unit and how?
What unit do you NOT want to control another unit and why?
You seem very confused. Your set-up is a little difficult because you need to record from and playback to the same instrument (BS2).
I am assuming that you want to use Performance mode on the SH-32.
Do the following:
Download the current version (for firmware v 1.25) of the OT manual from Elektron’s website.
Connect:
[ul]
[li]BS2 MIDI Out to OT MIDI In[/li]
[li]OT MIDI Out to SH-32 MIDI In[/li]
[li]SH-32 MIDI Thru to BS2 MIDI In[/li]
[/ul]
On the BS2:
[ul]
[li]Set the ‘Global: MIDI channel’ number to be 10.[/li]
[li]Set the ‘Global: Local’ setting to ‘Off’.[/li]
[/ul]
On the OT:
[ul]
[li]Set the AUTO CHANNEL number in the PROJECT > MIDI > CHANNELS menu to be 9.[/li]
[li]In the MIDI sequencer mode, set the MIDI channel number to 10 for MIDI track 1. (This track is for the BS2)[/li]
[li]In the MIDI sequencer mode, set the MIDI channel number to 11 for MIDI track 2, 12 for MIDI track 3, 13 for MIDI track 4, and 14 for MIDI track 5. (These tracks are for the SH-32 in its Performance mode.)[/li]
[/ul]
On the SH-32:
[ul]
[li]Put the SH-32 in Performance mode.[/li]
[/ul]
[ul]
[li]Set the MIDI receive channel number for the four Parts in Performance mode to be 11, 12, 13, and 14.[/li]
[li]Set the Performance Control Channel to ‘Off’ temporarily.[/li]
[li]Set the MIDI Thru setting to ‘On’.[/li]
[li]For now, set the MIDI Transmission/Reception mode to be ‘MODE 1’.[/li]
[/ul]
To record a sequence for the BS2:
[ul]
[li]Set the BS2 ‘Global: MIDI channel’ number to be 10.[/li]
[li]On the OT, select MIDI track 1.[/li]
[li]Record your sequence as described in the OT manual.[/li]
[/ul]
To record a sequence for the SH-32:
[ul]
[li]Set the BS2 ‘Global: MIDI channel’ number to be 9.[/li]
[li]On the OT, select MIDI track 2, 3, 4, or 5 (depending on which Part on the SH-32 that you want to play).[/li]
[li]Record your sequence as described in the OT manual.[/li]
[/ul]
To listen the sequences play back:
[ul]
[li]Set the BS2 ‘Global: MIDI channel’ number to be 10.[/li]
[li]Press ‘Play’ on the OT.[/li]
[/ul]
No. j_spurdo can set the BS2 and SH-32 to different channel numbers and use the AUTO CHANNEL feature on the OT to record sequences for each instrument.
The OP clearly states a desire to record sequences from the BS2 into different tracks of the OT’s MIDI sequencer for subsequent playback on the BS2 and SH-32.

Ah, yes. My bad!
I was actually about to pick a fight with you over dragging Auto Channel into this. Halfway into my reply I realised you were right.
