Midi Foot Controller Question

In 2050 maybe? :content:
The MP100? I didn’t try it, it looks interesting, pretty cheap. I just bought a MFC10 Yamaha.

hehe, glad this one is future proof :stuck_out_tongue:

I read your recommendations earlier in this thread (made sometime last year when you recommended the Softstep) and I wondered if this would also suit as a foot controller to do fun things with the Octatrack.

I’ve had the Octatrack for a few months now, but only now getting into live looping & recording my guitar playing etc into it, so I’m not yet fully conscious of my requirements/the possibilities re a foot controller beyond the start/stop/overdub functions

Haha. I use all of those too. My soft step recently took a backseat to the Morning Star MC 6. I needed the smaller form factor for a minimalist pedalboard. It mostly allows me to quickly load H9 patches (I have a lot of FX changes per song with one of my bands). I like the two expression pedal options when using it with the OT. I haven’t used it on stage with the OT just yet, only experimented at home. I also have been playing live so much, I don’t have a lot of time to reconfigure. Same with the damn ZOIA. I think it’s going to end up replacing my Avalanche Run, simply for utility reasons… but I have to decide if I can do without the knobs.

A foot pedal sending crossfader’s CC48 is obviously interesting.
The ability to send / toggle specific values for CCs is really interesting too.

I have a footpedal mapped to the crossfader, and have scene selects on a bank of switches (5 A scenes and 5 B scenes). Extremely useful. A great feature of the MFC10 is also that the external pedal input mappings are independant from the bank you’re in. You can change banks but the ext pedals/switches will keep the mapping you programmed. (No stacked CC’s though)

Ooh that Morning Star looks nice! Love the big display showing the loaded presets. The Soft Step 2’s alphanumerical display looks paltry by comparison.

I might end up being lazy and use the SS2 for Octatrack and the 12 Step for Zoia MIDI control. The 12 Step is criminally underutilized - I’ve mainly just used it to play drone notes against which I would practice violin/viola.

I’ve hooked the soft step up to the Minitaur for long release bass. ha! “great minds”…

The naming ability on the MC 6 is really its ace in the hole, IMO.

Is it possible to rename it MC5? :content:

hey there… I have a Rocktron MIDI Mate that sends CC but not midi notes. From what I have read I can not use it to control the pickup machines of the OT then. Am I right?

With CC59 you can mimic midi notes.
You have to send corresponding value.
Ex : CC59 value 36 corresponds to note 36 (C2).
So if it sends only 0 or 127 CC values, it can’t work.

You can control them with CC59 which emulates note on messages (eg CC59 value 64 = pickup play/stop)

Ok thanks. In the manual of the Rocktron I can find how to change the button’s CC but not how to change the button’s value. But maybe I am not yet grapsing the menu structure of the pedal.

I took a look at the manual out of curiosity, and found it one of the most confusing manuals I’ve ever read. It looks like your pedal board is specifically designed to match other Rocktron gear and I found no mention on how to assign values to CC’s, they only talk about “on/off midi messages”. That doesn’t mean much to me, and sure is not universal. I’m afraid your pedal board is not very useful with an Octatrack or with any other non-Rocktron gear unless you add some midi processor to translate what seems to be fixed values (like 0=off 127=on) into the values you actually need to control other midi equipment. But that’s quite a hassle and an additional expense. Unless you really need that pedal for gear you already own, my advice would be to get a more flexible one.

Same here. That’s what I was previously thinking.

The Controller access mode allows for the use of on/off MIDI control changes.

Haha most confusing manuals. So it’s not me… I will sell it asap. I would like something compact and able to send notes. 3 buttons should suffice…

@RogerPaolo the logidy umi3 has three buttons, sends notes etc and has been shown to work with the OT pickup machines. @AndreN has a nice video on it:

hey SamvanLan, yep, I saw that one, but this pedal has nog midi DIN out, which implies that I need an interface. Looking for something small with midi DIN out. LIke https://www.famcmusic.com/product/liquid-foot-mini/ but then for a decent price…

Check the thread ^^

@RogerPaolo yeah short story long is a recently bought the logidy umi3 and the $55 midiplus midi usb host. I could not get it to talk to my rytm at all so I decided to return it and have the soleman coming now.

It may have worked with the Kenton usb midi host but for some reason $140 for a little converter is hard for me to get pumped about!
