Midi drift question

I’m considering an octatrack to replace my aging Yamaha SU 700.

My current set-up which has always worked flawlessly is the SU controlling an EH 2880 for loops via midi. When I hit Play on the SU, the EH will stay in sync forever but when I tried this set up with a Korg KP2 as a midi master, the EH 2880 would drift after a few minutes. I found out later that the KP2 only sends 1 midi message when you start a loop but the SU sends one with the beginning of every loop.

So, will the OT control an Electro-Harmonix 2880 looper without drifting?

good question, you may be able to replace the ehx with the octatrack and midi foot pedal though…

I know, but I kinda like the 2880 and have years worth of Bass loops on CF.

fair enough, those loops would be great octafood… just sayin’

The Kaoss Pads have notoriously bad timing. The Octatrack is exponentially more precise.

Yes, I’ve never been able to get my KP3 to sync up with anything correctly, and I’ve found many other reports of this online.

I’ve found that it syncs just fine when it is slaved to a really solid clock source. For all the complaints I’ve seen, mine stays in solid sync when slaved to my Elektron gear.

Oh yeah…It was a KP3 I used as a master to slave the 2880, not a KP2 as noted above…regardless, that bad syncing experience has made me hang onto the SU 700 for about 14 years now. I’m just tired of juggling floppy discs and saving projects to 100 MB Zip’s.
The Octatrack price is a bit steep…anybody here want to sell one? I’m in Canada.

Yes, but folks on this forum don’t have much good to say about “pick-up machines” from what I can see. Am I wrong?

i´m really a OT fan ! but when it comes to the looper/pickup machines question the OT is no option for me.
not that it isn´t possible to set the OT up as a looper - but compared to the most simple looping device
it´s just no fun in my opinion.
actually I´m still searching for a MIDI syncable looper to use it with my setup.
couldn´t decide yet for one but the EHX (maybe the 45000) was one of those I considered to add.
especially to loop live instruments and also to use it for transitions (and having time to change
a project on the OT in a live situation)
another fact is that you have more tracks left on the OT and additional hardware
outputs from the looper.
i think it´s not a good idea to replace the EHX - but everyone has to find out himherself
