Midi Data from OT thru MS to Ipad - Dont Work

Hello all.

I try to sequence my Ipad with my OT and want to use the MS as USB Midi Interface. This works for Clock. But i can’t seuquence synths on the Ipad with the OT’s sequencer.

I tryed all combination of Midi Port/Channel/usw. Nothing wokred.
To Play the Ipad Synth with the MS Sequencer is not a Problem.

Any Ideas? Is the MS capable?

To get midi note data going into the M:S and out to the ipad you need to do a few things. Off the top of my head.

  • The note data going into the M:S must go in on the autochannel. I think that defaults to 10 on the M:S.
  • whatever track is currently selected (and therefore receiving the auto channel notes) must have ‘MOUT’ ticked. I think that’s on the track menu.
  • that track will then send midi on whatever midi channel the track is set to.
  • in settings, the midi out/thru must be set to out.

That’s the basics to get it working. One of your tracks is effectively a dedicated path for your midi note data.

Is that correct? I’m not certain but that doesn’t make sense to me. It’s passing through, right? Out will be notes sequenced on M:S itself right? Happy to be proven wrong though!

If you set it to ‘thru’ midi in is routed directly to midi out and nothing you do with midi on the M:S (e.g. midi notes coming from the sequencer) will make it to the midi out port. I guess I may have misread the post and that’s what the OP wants ?

This person wants octatrack din midi to turn into usb midi and pass through the M:S USB connection to the ipad using the octatrack as a USB midi controller for soft synths.

OK, hadn’t thought of that (not used to devices without USB midi, so I hadn’t considered it ) ok my first advice was incorrect then, and @craig was right, setting it to midi thru is what’s needed.

I sometimes overthink these things, but I thought that this would require a host.

You would need the CCK adapter, which I guess is a kind of host (though not usually called that).

Hopefully the OP can enlighten us to whether or not this ends up working (M:S as usb midi interface).

Ah, I think I’ve got it. Elektrons do not convert from DIN midi to USB midi, never have and maybe never will. Hence why it doesn’t work

Sounds interesting. Never thought about the auto channel. I gonna try it later. Thanks.

Thats not totally right. Like i mentioned: sending clock to the ipad on this way works great.

Nö, Thats not what i want. I want it to pass thru.

Go into the M:S and make sure clock send is off, keep clock receive on. Set OT clock to send.

If your M:S still has clock send on, it may be synced with OT. but it’s still generating and sending it’s own clock and that’s why ipad is successfully receiving it. Over time, the M:S and ipad will stay synced but the OT will drift.

If M:S clock send is confirmed off, and the ipad is still clock synced, then maybe there’s some way to do it how you want but I’m pretty sure that craig is correct. We’ll just have to see.

Hey everyone. Sorry for that hard Delay…
I managed the Problem. The Trick was the Auto-Channel… When i got Midi in from Midi and Midi Out to usb, i was able to trigger the ipad with the OT, when i selected T6 and set MOut to on. I choose Channel 11. So Auto Channel to 11, OT Miti Track to 11, Ipad Synth input to 11 when T6 is selected everything worked.

Only Problem: I choode a different Channel and Midi Data (in my case: Chord) Is triggering e.g. Kick DRM. But so far i am okay with this.

Big thanks for ur Help!!!

Now you have a working combination, you may want to try changing it a little to not use the auto channel, if that works it will solve the side effect you noted with the chords.

It’s a while since I did this and I can’t remember for sure why the auto channel was part of my formula. It may be the only reason I chose it was because I was using a controller for input to m:s and I wanted to be able to use it with any channel. OTOH the auto channel might be a necessary part of getting it working, I can’t remember.

I finally ended up to buy a simple usb to midi interface for 15$ an amazon. This makes everything much more easy.

But thanks for the help.
