Microwave xt

Late jumping on this, but actually thinking of purchasing an XT myself to pair with the OT.

Can anyone who’s used the two together confirm of it handles midi in multi-mode, i.e. can I send midi modulation from my ot to as many of the available cc’s and as many active tracks as I like on the XT without the XT going into overload / lagging / crashing?

Just asking as I had this problem with an older synth prior, and now looking to add something to really get the most out of the OT’s midi engine.

Love the video! Really brought me back to when I had one of these in the late 90’s. It really did sound special and still does to this day. What I really wanted back then was a Microwave I with all of the controls and improvements of the XT, but retaining the I’s analog filter. I imagine or at least envision that’s what a Quantum is (and so much more). Of course, everyone wanted a Wave, but that was the very definition of unobtainable for just about everyone.

I would say the quantum is really not like the microwave xt at all tbh

The things that make the xt special are unique to it. The Quantum is special in its own ways.

But if you make similar patches on both (using the exact same wavetables etc) IMO there is no contest - the XT sounds better.

The Quantum really starts to shine when you take it places the XT cant go. Then it becomes amazing.

After looking at some demoes of the XT, this album kept coming to mind:

Think the XT is used here?

I didn’t know where to put this. A teaser from Waldorf.

Waldorf has been running a tantalizing teaser video on its various pages. Featuring the Microwave , the company’s first product, it states, “Legends never die.” Is Waldorf going to re-release a hardware version of the Microwave?

I thought that’s what the M was…?

A plugin looks as a viable option. Not sure there is a big market for 1 knob interface :red_circle: and knobby version would be too expensive…

The upcoming DSP56300 emulation of the XT looks like it’ll be amazing. Their emulation of the Q, as well as Access Virus, seems to be spot on. Given that these emulations are free it’d be hard for Waldorf to beat that but perhaps they’ll try.

Hm, but how does the emulation work with the filters? They were analog, right?

Nevermind, found it = they weren’t

Yeah, the digital filters are a huge part of the XT’s sound. That’s why I haven’t been interested in the M – analog filters just won’t get that characteristic gritty/weird thing. I deeply regret selling my XT.

Most of the digital filters (and some more) were implemented in later firmware. So now you have basically dual (serial) filter setup. Digital filter -> analog filter -> stereo analog VCA.

Yeah I think that teaser could be M related… possibly we will see a core or keys version, M being the modern take on the OG microwave there isn’t any other model of the OG other than the rack mount so really the teaser just leaves pure speculation.

Yeah I am looking forward to the XT DSP emulation, I think they supposedly approached Waldorf wanting to do some collaboration on it but the proposal was rejected. The Q is just the uQ though, lots of stuff unique to the full Q.

You can get access to an early version of this if you donate to the project and join their Discord btw

Never saw this thread funny enough. I agree with those that say the XT is the best digital synth ever made. (however, I think the 3rd Wave kind of tipped itself into that category for me, though it’s really an analog/digital hybrid, so I guess they can share the top slot) I miss my XTk. I’ve thought about getting one again, but I’ll probably go back to the 3rd Wave when I’m ready to add a wavetable synth back into my studio. For now I’m getting by on the digital waves in the Gemini, but they don’t do everything the XT can do. The XT is really still in a class of its own, even with things like the 3rd Wave and M out there. Nothing can quite do everything it can do, in the same way, with the same combination of features that go into making its exact sound.

Good timing, the emulator is in public beta now! Bring your own firmware. Index of /dsp56300/builds/xenia/beta

Nice, thanks for the heads-up!

I’ve been having a little mess around with it but can’t figure out where/how you install presets? I downloaded a load of .mid files from the Waldorf site and have tried them in various folders but nothing is showing up.

You go into the browser, then right click “data sources” in the first list view and you can add file/folder there. Not super obvious haha
