And also must point out what works for one person doesn’t work for everyone so as mentioned always speak to a professional even just to touch base if you think you don’t need it. I’m always very cautious about giving advice which is why mine was pretty short with talk to someone and enjoy your music.

yep, my own personal ‘techniques’ included.
It can be hard to try to be helpful and supportive and be sensible at the same time.

Things that have helped me:

Try and walk in nature as often as possible.

Move my body when I wake up. A 10 minute walk before breakfast can be soooo good.

Deep breathing exercises. Multiple gains just from this.

Media fast. No newspapers, no tv, no radio, no internet news.

Read books which help you become more who you are. James Hillman and Jordan Peterson have helped me.

Clean diet. No processed foods, no refined sugars, very low in starchy carbohydrates. Good quality meats. High quality EPA and DHA fish oil capsules (Green Pasture are the best I’ve found).

Pay attention to your dreams. Keep a dream diary next to your bed so you can write them down as soon as you wake up. That’s your subconscious speaking to you.

Try and take regular small steps toward your goals. Even small steps give you a sense of pride and achievement which you can build on.

Im very similar to yourself in this regard. been struggling with it for about 15 years. various treatments have been unsuccessful for me personally.
a couple of weeks ago I managed to locate a doctor near me who is a thyroid specialist. Dude is an encyclopedia on the subject. went to him as I’ve pretty much every symptom (including anxiety & depression) but I’ve only ever gone to my local gp who turns out is by no means a thyroid specialist.

this new doc said I’m a walking Red flag n is convinced I’m hypothyroid. I should be getting my results back early this week so I’ll let you know how I get on.
it’s suprisingly common, and very treatable in the right hands but at least in Ireland is hugely under-diagnosed due to lack of proper testing.

obviously I’m not in any way saying this is definitely the cause of my or your situation, it’s just where I’m at presently, so thought I’d share the info in case it’s been overlooked.

Great topic.
I’m having a very challenging time for the last 6 years (taking care of close family member),
My ways to ease this kind of everyday life are:

  1. Walking for an hour at least once a day, adopt a dog if can, three times walking a day makes everything better.
  2. Friends and family
  3. Good food
  4. 20 min’ siesta/super nap/kind of meditation
  5. Weed works for me, This is a medicine and I’m definitely not a doctor.

If you feel bad, sad or mad way too much, and you don’t have anybody to talk about this don’t feel anxious about getting professional help. If you talk about this with your family or friends lay the cards on the table, and do not talk around the bush, or they might avoid you because they might don’t understand it if you are agressive or always down. If you don’t have any family or friends get professional help. The more time you wait with asking for help the longer you will suffer. And you only have one life. Time is running always :wink:

Art is an wonderful way to express feelings. The time spent with it can be a good self therapy, but think about it: it also can make bad things more bad - the same way it can make good things better.

It was not easy but did a great positive change and very ease up the everyday life.

Talk about it with your friends and family. Be open about it to yourself and to others.

Accept that a mental health issue is a health issue. It’s not your fault. Don’t blame yourself, don’t accept blame from others. Try to accept that it will take time, effort, and attention to manage. Avoid overcompensation.

Seek professional help from licensed mental health professionals. Avoid therapy that’s hasn’t been scientifically proven to actually work.

Keep in mind that self-medication almost always has side effects that make your issue worse in the long run, or that have a tendency to become a health issues in themselves.

This is a great community, but not equipt with the needed infrastructure and necessary training to dip its toe into matters such as mental health.

Please …this forum is not the correct avenue to open dialogue arround matters that require professional intervention and help on levels that require trained and experienced professionals…

Human homeostasis is not a toy…please if you are remotely concerned that an aspect of your good self is not healthy then seek ailment through appropriate channels…too many weirdos having way too many opinions on forums is not a pathway to an integrated self…!

Some things that help me:

  1. structure: go to bed and go out om time
  2. move, walk sport or whatever to move. My mental health went up drasticly when juggling one eventing a week again.
  3. eat food your grand grandmother could have eaten. Prefab food contains big amounts of sugar, salt, and things you dont want
  4. cooking helpt me to be in contact with my body and environement.
  5. mindfulness (practices to do meditation during the day in stead of boring meditations in the morning or eventing)
  6. dont do xtc, usually not good for your mental stability
  7. dont do other drugs, makes you tired, not fit.

Summary: try to be fresh and fit.
Remark: changing lifestyle is very very very difficult! It helps to search for a coach to help
Remark 2: if you have problems for a long time, go to a doctor/ psychologist.
Remark 3: dont forget that most people have mental issues for a partbof their life. You are not the only one.

Good advice.

Nope, can severely impact mental health negatively so if you don’t already then don’t start it up. CBD alone is fine but the THC isn’t doing anything to help anxiety and will often make it much worse.

I just turned 50. I’ve suffered from Bipolar disorder since childhood (although, back then, I was just considered a “problem child”). I’ve tried many medications, both pharmaceuticals and “self” medicating, and nothing seems to work long term. Antidepressants make me manic and/or give me severe anxiety. Mood stabilizers make me feel numb, kill me desire to create and also kill my sex drive. Self medication through alcohol and weed worked for a while, but I got tired of being in an “altered state” all the time.

Music is certainly one thing that has kept me around this long. Sometimes in severely depressed states, I won’t see the studio for weeks, but when I am on a manic episode, I can do amazing things. I have learned to manage it the best I can. I am lucky that my friends and family are understanding about it (which generally means to leave me alone when I need it).

In the end, this is just who I am. It has made me a bit eccentric, but very creative throughout my life. The main thing is to surround yourself with understanding people, and be open about it.

Whilst I largely agree with your point lots of people don’t get anywhere by going through “appropriate channels” and discussion of other proven therapies and practices might help.

To be clear I don’t think it is appropriate for anyone here to recommend pharmaceutical or recreational drugs, but the other stuff is fine and in many cases helps.

As I said CBD is acting on reducing anxiety but not the THC, I have 3 family members for whom weed use has had serious negative effects on their mental health, of course everyone isn’t affected the same, and lots of weed users play down or deny the mental health issues too.

You can get CBD oils, capsules and so on without any THC content, I suggest trying those instead of weed if you already smoke weed. Unfortunately the weed industry for the most part is a lot like the tobacco industry in its early days, shouting loud about “benefits” whilst hushing up about the negative aspects. And many high profile advocates of weed and many weed users in general seem to like to play down any negative aspects, a shame I think as it can ruin peoples lives.

I’m not anti drugs BTW but I am in favour of people knowing what they are getting into with all the information easy to find and not weighted with bias.

I was close to burnout as my work enviroment changed to shit, i decided that i have to quit my job, and seek something different. In my next contract i made sure that i get better conditions.

I think its worthwhile to checkout what in your situation makes you uncomfortable, and then start doing something about it. Depression is often a gut feeling, that something is wrong, and you need to find out what it is - and if you know what it is you need to do something about it. Starting to go in some direction already helps instead of waiting that things get better from doing nothing.

I had good success with L-Tryptophane, but that works only for some weeks (can be repeated after some month and is also avilable as fitness supplement, or in chicken or banannas for example ), it can help to produce serotonine, but at the end you need something positive to do in your life - for me its beeing creative.

I say - love it, leave it or change it.
