Meng Qi Wing Pinger

Nice find by @Jukka on the Superbooth 2019 thread. I first heard of Meng Qi as a builder of Ciat Lonbarde (Peter Blasser) designed instruments, but he’s clearly come into his own. Wing Pinger is on his front page, with several short demo vids.

I know it’s been a while but Wing Pinger is out on the streets, well not exactly the streets, but certainly in my studio in the UK now. Here’s a little video I made with it today.

Hope you might enjoy it, that is if the video link works that is as this is rather challenging to resolve!

I think that’s the danger of so much wonderful new tech at times! It’s good to keep a list, then look back at it a few months later and try to remember what you liked about it first time round. Then return to it again. You’d be surprised at how much your opinion might change!
And at least it’s better for your bank balance!

absolutely !

I’ve earmarked a Buchla Easel Command as my next purchase, so I’m trying not to get distracted…but this isn’t helping !!

Nice sounds though

From an email back in August:

This is a special model - Wing Pinger Nü.

“Nü” is the pronunciation of “Female” in Chinese. I believe arts come from female nature, from subconscious, perception, emotions, freedom and chaos.
[ pics, other stuff]
My current plan is still offering the standard version without the keyboard. With Nü as a special model.

I cannot find a price anywhere in the email for either special or standard model

Schneidersladen Berlin:

I guess that’s the special model, not the standard. I mean, there’s a keyboard, right?

Indeed, have not seen another version in the wild. Maybe it will come later.

Update:
Nothing about it on the webpage

The standard will probably look more like this - though I guess with a black plate rather than a white one.

I’ve been following the development of this instrument for over a year, I think. If my shoddy memory serves me well, I believe that Meng scrapped the version without the keyboard. I think he deemed the keyboard too essential to the spirit of the instrument that it became the “standard” version going forward.

You might be right. The aforementioned email was actually send August 2019 not August 2020, and thus likely to be out of date.

Here’s another little experiment for you to listen to. Looking at a more glitchy drifting approach to the Wing Pinger
