I’ve really struggled to find monosynths over the past few years that give me the sound characteristic that I like and I’ve gone through all sorts of mono’s and ended up moving them on.
The only one that has stuck with me is the Sub 37 - I just adore it with a good reverb and this is the sort of stuff that I like.
But, I am looking for something similar. I’ve got to admit that this does the trick but the chances of getting one are less than zero
To my ear, most of the sounds in the Moog video could just as easily work in an aggressive fashion if you took off the reverb and changed the instrumentation/arrangement around them. That said, the Moogs seem to have a tonal balance that engages and feels comfortable/familiar, even when they’re driving hard: “that” Moog filter sound.
Do you have any examples of mono synths you’ve rejected, for comparison?
Have you got some examples of ones you didn’t like?
I find the Roland SH01a can go from beautiful and soft to angry af if you want it to. Amazing into some delay and reverb. Plus the added bonus that you can run it in Unison or Polyphonic modes.
Dreadbox Typhon is another great one, with the added advantage of built in effects.
So, I’ve had a go at things like;
Matrixbrute - thought it sounded a bit thin at times, I didn’t like the sound of the osc. It just didn’t sound right to me. No diss as it is a fantastic synth
Pro 3 - seemed like it was happiest when it was more aggressive. Like, yeah, it could be tamed but I didn’t feel like it thanked me for it
Grandmother and Matriarch - really nice but a bit too close to the Sub
Maybe you are absolutely right and it is ‘that’ Moog filter that I really like - I need to think about that for a while
but in essence, no matter what an osc sounds like naked…the filtering can change anything about it…
and here, i have to throw my everlasting tip of the most underrated elektron machine of alll in the game again…the analog heat…
with this, u can transform any kind of signal into any kind of destruction or density or any kind of smooth 'n fad 'n warm signal…with truu and timeless analog flavour…
buy the cheapest plastic crap synth or silliest romplers…
or ur phone or lowest utube codecs…feed it through the heat and off u go…
If you’re not a fan of the Pro3, the Pro2 may be a good option?
The four separate oscillators can all do a lot of different waves and superwaves, and it can get really mellow and sweet very easily.
Plus I just generally love that synth.
The only frame of reference I have is things I’ve owned and tried but in my experience neither Dreadbox Nyx nor Malekko Manther are inherently aggressive and instead quite beautiful in their own way
