I really like the form factor of the Micro. I’d jump on one right now if it had the expansion card slot like the other two units. I think Mellotron is limiting their potential future revenue by doing that.
You know what, I moved my Micro to another part of the room yesterday, and plugged it into a different mixer, and suddenly realized that yes, the output IS weirdly low compared to other ostensibly line-level gear. I hadn’t realized how much gain I was adding in the mixer. It’s not a problem in any way, but it’s noteworthy.
Also, Meriphew, you used to be on the TapeOp messageboard back in the day, right?? I’m inverseroom from there
Yes I used to post at TapeOp. Cheers!
I reached out to Perfect Circuit to see if/when they’d get more Minis/Micros in. They told me that Vintage King is now the exclusive US dealer for Mellotron.
So you’re going for a Mini?
I’m still undecided. I much prefer the size of the Micro, but not being able to take expansion cards is a real bummer.
Have you checked the Manikin Memotron?
Seriously the Expansion cards on the Mellotron M4000D contain the same samples as the MTRON Pro. But the MTRON has way more including the lost ones the Streetly and Orchestron tapes. Your just paying for the box minus the standard cards which are stupidly priced…
That’s what I decided, even if I had the space for the Mini, the cards are so idiotically expensive I would never buy them. The Micro feels great and I’ll probably buy the complete M-Tron Pro when it goes on sale.
I have not.
I’m ok with the price on the expansion cards if they were all sounds I could use, but being that half of the sounds are rhythm/drums, I really can’t see myself buying them. Which makes me lean towards the Micro unit.
Having said that - it is possible they will release expansion cards in the future that have stuff I want (dedicated Rhodes sounds as an example).
I just want a self contained unit (no computer/laptop) that is gig friendly.
I get you. But you are missing out on so much by just having a couple of expansion cards that are crazily priced.(£300 each for just the original 6 with no expansions)(btw ive recorded all the samples(all the original and modern) into my Prophet X Rompler
But you can get a Digitakt to do it as well. Or anything with a chromatic keyboard built in). Nord Wave for instance.
It’s also the knobs on the left side of the keys on the Mellotron Mini/Micro that are a big plus. It makes it a lot more expression friendly being able to turn knobs and tweak things as you’re playing.
The pitch bend knob is unsprung with a detent, and I really love the feel of it…it’s easy to add some subtle warble to things
Its your money. If its what you want get it. The Mini is great for portability compared to what ive suggested.
I see that the newer version of the Micro updates are done via Bluetooth. Does the Mini update via Bluetooth as well?
I don’t think so but let me check as I never even thought about updating it guess the mellotron has that affect on me lol
update, no signs of wi-fi capability anywhere to be seen on the mini in utilities, configuration modes, or anywhere so it looks like it’s just on the micro…
I guess the mini is probably through midi sysEx
