I have mixed feelings about Zenology, and Roland Cloud in general, but, there are a lot of good sound sets you can get for the MC707, and you only need to pay for one month, get them all on an SD card in the 707, and you can cancel the subscription.
The sound sets are a good way to see possibilities of the 707.
Zenology, for all its quirks, is really powerful for sound design and tweaking of your own sounds, and lets you send them back into your MC707.
The ‘Pro’ Roland Cloud subscription also lets you download tons of sample packs, if that’s of any interest.
+1 on the desire for a Zencore programmer box-- but I know it’s probably never gonna happen.
I wanted to love the 101 so much because of the size and weight and sound quality…so great for live sets…but there’s just something about the sound. It’s silky smooth and very produced and polished…but most of the 101 sounds had very little changing response to dynamic playing - and I know that’s just the way they are.
I’m sure a Fantom has all the velocity crossfading, velocity-to-sample start point programming and all the things that make sounds dynamic and 3-dimensional…
But I play beautiful sounds on the 101 and they don’t have enough dynamism for me.
Now if we could load our own waveforms into a JD-08 - THEN we’d be in business.
After forcing myself to use only the mc 101 for a month, muscle memory kicked in for most of the shortcuts. If I used the mc 101 not on a regular base, I would have trouble getting into it every time than this overlay would be pretty handy. Yeah it is not pretty, but functional
I’m just starting the same process. It’s taken me ages to work out how to activate the Arp…couldn’t find details in the Owners Manual or Reference Manual and in the end I had to watch a historic video on the 1.6 upgrade (was that when it was introduced?) to find out how to activate it!
Need a solid month of play now with no other instruments to break the back of this one.
Out of interest, what sort of life are people typically getting out of their MC-101 on a set of NiMH batteries?
I thought I’d seen people quote a few hours but I put a new set in mine back in mid January and although I’ve done a bit on a power supply I’ve also had a reasonable amount of sofa jamming and I’ve only just got the low battery warning.
Just wondering what the ‘battery only’ life is in peoples experience?
@DrOrthogonal Interesting - I have never used rechargeables with mine because the alkaline battery life is abysmal so I assumed that rechargeables would be similar, what brand/type are you using?
I use Eneloop Pros, and I get about 5+ hours… I use them for all my devices, since they are used mostly for camera equipment.
I love them… some will say the Ikea batteries, but I heard they have changed in the recent years, but still probably great.
I have a bunch on hand for a reload.
The only criticism is that I will get the low battery warning, then it will shut down almost immediately. So stay on your toes… but that doenst matter to me since I hate using it as a sequencer… I mainily use it as a tone engine, and will use the piano roll in logic if I need to really get some sequencing going, or my Maschine mk3 might be a good controller for it, but I havent tried it yet.

Good tip, thanks. Will this work with the Core sub?
@BLKrbbt, if you’re seeing close to 5hrs then that would make sense. I’m sure that’s the sort of performance I’m getting.
I read in this thread that the time from the warning to shutdown could be quick so as soon as it appeared I hit save!
