MC 707 / 101 : Roland Grooveboxes

I had both the Syntakt and the MC707, but I ended up sending the Syntakt back. They are both dope machines, but the 707 is so much more flexible and I think the hardware feels better.

One thing I wished that Roland would add to scatter, is the ability to set individual scatter pads to different parts of the mix. For example, scatter pad 1 effects track 1, scatter pad 2 effects track 2, scatter pad 3 effects mix out, etc.

I sold my Syntakt and bought an MC-707 and I much prefer the 707.

Really happy with my choice. Such a fun machine.

I considered the 101, but the deep editing and hands on controls sold it for me.

Yes, sounds like many people bought the Syntakt just because it was the latest Elektron device but ultimately are getting rid of it 3 month later because it’s pretty limited from a sound standpoint all things considered. The analogue part isn’t very interesting. Of course the sequencer is great but it’s too expensive just for its sequencer.

You can totally do this already

In scatter pad edit it is position parameter.

Yup. There’s a limitation somewhere (I forget) which means this doesn’t get recorded in the master out via USB if I recall correctly.

Amazing, thank you!

What the scatter position setting, or scatter in general?

One thing which is pretty cool is scatter can act on external inputs, so if you say have 4 channels/tracks set to ext inputs, you can use scatter position to do punch in fx on those inputs. The 707 is actually in some ways a very powerful performance mixer/fx/sweetener box thanks to the good fx and well implemented input features.

I meant assigning a scatter pad to a certain track. I.e. if you assign a pad to track 4, when recording via USB only track 4 will have the scatter (and not the master). Though I’d love to be proven wrong!

Would be nice with a Random Scatter Generator feature to quickly try new forms of Scatter effects without having to dive into endless menus.

A random scatter generator would be cool. I would also like some presets that could be tweaked.

You can load the different scatter algorithms from the demo projects into your project. Exploring what they did and how they did it helped me understand Scatter a bit better.

Without much documentation on Scatter out there, that’s probably the next best thing. It would also be cool if they made available a bunch of Scatter preset banks, but that seems very unlikely at this point

There is quite a bit of info in the manual (p38-40 in 707 manual) and experimenting with the various settings makes it easier to understand what does what.

Be aware there are a few bugs in scatter, I did not document them all but one is that the position does not always work correctly. Overall not any showstoppers but can be a bit annoying.

I wish we could copy/paste scatter pads fx the same as we can drum pad sounds.

Found this, might be useful to 707 users

I swear, by the old gods and the new, I’ve looked in the manual and searched everywhere - is it possible to copy and paste a step in a drum track on the 707?! I’m looking at that cheatsheet above and it says FUNC+[UP] should copy and FUNC+[DOWN] should paste but I can’t get it to work.

That is for kit sound copy, so say you have a tom on pad 3 and you want to copy it to pad 4.

It looks like the copy+paste step only works on a tone track. Which is annoying to say the least.

Did you report those bugs to Roland?

Yeah, they don’t acknowledge them though just say they will pass to dev team.
