MC 707 / 101 : Roland Grooveboxes

I love my 707 but it does indeed have some odd quirks.

Does anyone know? Happy new year!

I think you can sample over USB yes, but to be sure just check these vids by Roland on the subject: The Ultimate Guide to the Roland MC-101 Groovebox Chapter 17

Thanks for the pointer, but unfortunately it’s not clear on whether this works from Android or not. The video just says “PC”.

Is there anyone here with an Android phone and an MC-101 willing to give this a try? Thanks in advance!

This vid is about connecting to the iPad/iPhone specifically, but as it’s only relying on class compliant connections the principles should translate to Android.

@djst It is kind of possible indirectly. The USB audio in isn’t iOS specific. With the new 1.7 features you could set up a track to receive audio from USB (they call it PC in the menus) and then record that to a looper track. From there, use the new Looper track export feature to get it into a wav. Then you could load it into a pad.

I already tested MC707 with a galaxy S7, with OTG adapter, it works well. I used open camera to have both video and direct audio of MC707.

I think you mean one of these, right? usb-c male to usb-a female adapter.

That’s great to know that it works, thanks! What do you mean with “both video and direct audio” though?

Yes exacty this type of adapter ! It came with smartphone in my case.

I plug the MC707 usb to the smartphone, then I film using “open camera” app, it record the movie with audio coming from MC707, that way I don’t have to record audio separatly and sync it later using a video editor. It is really handy for short social network video type, or sharing stuff.

This only downside is that level is low, not mastered, maybe I should play with general comp fx for this.

Aha! We’re talking about two different things then, my question is whether the audio can go the other way. Meaning, can you sample from your phone (let’s say while playing on Spotify) to the MC-x0x?

The other functionality is great to know about though, so thanks for that!

Yes it works both way ! I use it to sample on youtube.

Another question from a 101 newbie:

Is there any way to automate or record the Scatter function?

I don’t mean recording the resulting stuff as audio in a looper track, but as automation in a tone or drum track.

I read somewhere in a forum something about a Scatter sequence. Unfortunately I didn’t find any further informations about this, whether in the Reference Manual nor in the Update description.

What kind of sound design is possible from the MC-101? I read through the manual and it doesn’t even cover the menu entries (the manual must be the laziest one ever written).

I’m trying to figure out what kind of parameters you can modify, aside from basic ADSR envelope design - assuming even that is possible? What about vibrato? Is there an assignable LFO?

No it is pretty basic, it does have random patch generation which is quite good though, you can select a type - eg lead, bass, pad etc and it will generate a sound, keep randomising until you hear one you like.

Hey y’all - I’ve had a 707 in the past but never used the slicing. Curious, what are peoples’ opinion of it?

Obviously not an MPC, but from the YouTubes I’ve seen, it seems manageable and useful

Also - when I used my own samples with the 707, they were considerable quieter and less punchy than the samples that come with it. Anyone know what was up with that? Thanks!

I don’t have one, but the reference manual seems to talk about ADSR and vibrato in the tone parameters section at the end. The limited notion of LFO is called Motion Designer; you can apply it to a control knob, but it’s made part of the recorded motion (as if you were twisting a knob) so it’s not as easy to tweak dynamically. I went to look at these things because the TR-6S has only one LFO per kit, and I was curious what the more synthy box did.

OK, so not even pitch modulation? Can I assume that there are at least a handful of good presets that have some pitch modulation on them that can be used with a filter and some ADSR modifications? I’m not super picky, just want to make sure there are some “Roland analogue” sounding presets on there that I can use.

I’m trying to choose between buying an MC-101 or a JX-08 or JD-08 as my little sound module. What’s attractive about the MC-101 is that it has more variety of sound compared to the boutiques, including lots of great drums, and a 4 track sequencer. What’s attractive about the boutiques is that it’s much more hands on and can go deeper in pure sound design. What I love about all of the options is that they seem like fun little devices to noodle on outside of the studio as well as being useful sound modules in the studio.

It has 3K presets, or so, a large portion of which are “Roalnd Analog” approximations (JX, JP, TB, SH…). Of course the synth engine has all the modulation capabilities you wish for, and certainly way more than the original analogs, you just can’t get at them directly on the device.
