From my browser, I can see the founder of SoNoMu with this URL:

But, as I said, I don’t really know how to search, and I found this by searching for “sonomu”, and noticing that someone typed that string in their message to this person. The @luka in that message brought me to the above URL.

There may be a way to browse all of sonomu.club’s posts from my server, but I don’t know about it.

Not much help, sorry!

something that I have noticed is that sometimes I get more information about a server if I search not from my mastodon account but directly on the website of the server, not logged in, which is strange and wish it was different.
Hier it is the local feed of the sonomu server, i hope it helps your search.

I was able to see the sonomu.club in the server list after figuring out I need to search for “sonomu.club” instead of “sonomu”, but the server doesnt accept registrations. I’m going to contact the admin now that I found the account on the mastodon side. Thanks!

Please do not ask for account here just to try out Mastodon. Our resources are scarce and we’d like a close-knit community of fediverse-active music-makers who are already familiar with fediquette and in need of safe space that they can and know how to use.

When you request a new account on our instance, make sure you introduce yourself thoroughly - as a sound-maker, AND as user of fediverse. Again, please don’t ask for an account here if you don’t know what are content warnings (CWs) and ALT image/media descriptions for within the fedi/masto culture and you are annoyed at people trying to make safer and better spaces for those less privileged.

We take moderation seriously.

I’m all for building community and finding other music makers to connect and talk with, but whoever wrote this sounds like a lot. I’m curious about Mastodon, but my main concern is petty tyrant moderators ruling their servers like their own little kingdoms. This does not encourage me to look into Mastodon at all

Most of them are not like this one actually, so you have a lot to choose from if you don’t like this. For me, this looks like a lot, but a lot of care taken for keeping it a safer space for the people in there. Why should they do things “for you”? they are doing things for themselves as they want it. they might not aim to convince you to join them, although I think is nice to see more and more people in the fediverse.
Sometimes there is this analogy to explain the fediverse with email protocol, so i thought of this:
saying that you dont like mastodon because you dont like a server is like saying you dont like to send emails because you dont like gmail.
edit: of course you have the right not to like mastodon or the fediverse. i am also not trying to convince anybody.

Yeah, unfortunately I guess there are different groups doing some gatekeeping, but what I have seen is also a lot of people welcoming new registrations and servers working a lot and getting more server space to be able to keep up with the new people. Of course it is not easy to makes things “easy” to “normies”, who are used to a lot of things that work differently in IG, FB, etc…but I am optimistic that it will get easier and the fediverse will grow.

One good thing about Mastodon is that broad, open, general communities can coexist on the network with focused, gate-kept ones. There are boundaries around the communities, but they’re porus. One groups exclusivity shouldn’t inpinge on another group’s lack of it.

However, managing that flexibility is quite technical, and the Mastodon network creators havn’t done a great job of explaining it, or making it easy to do for newcomers.

I also took the time to read the blurb regarding applying to join, and now I dont want to anymore… I get it, they are tired of CIS users harassing them and whatnot, but I would have expected a lil more inclusivity…

We should set up our own EM server?

I’ve been a mastodon.social member for years but I’ve never contributed anything. When I first signed up I did find it a bit obtuse and it sort of felt like single people shouting into the void rather than a community atmosphere (in the way it is here or, dare I say, Reddit or Discord). I’m probably using/looking at it wrong though, that’s probable.

One question for seasoned users: I tried to join sonomu to see what it’s about but my mastodon.social credentials don’t work there. Presumably I need then a separate account for sonomu? If so, how do I wander around mastodon.social AND sonomu using the same client/app? This doesn’t seem very obvious.

Yes, each server is a separate thing with separate accounts. Sounds like you just gave your mastodon.social login details to the sonomu server admins

To post on that server, yes. But not to read content posted there

Edit: you can think of it like two separate forums that both use Discourse, e.g. elektronauts and llllllll.co - you need separate accounts to post on each, but you can still read the posts on each site even if you only have an account here. The difference is that discourse forums are just websites and are completely separate things that happen to use the same software. With mastodon you can actually follow users on other servers and repost content from other servers, because the software allows users on separate servers to communicate with each other

You can enter the full URL of any (public) post on the mastodon network to view it from another server instance, and then you can read posts (and follow users) from anywhere. It’s just a bit of a manual process to initially “find” content that exists in a separate part of the network.

This fediverse thing is fascinating, on one hand it reminds me of the chaotic interweb of the 90s where you never quite knew where you’d end up next, on the other I’m a bit disappointed that the fediverse feels more disjointed than it has to be.

I’ve read that originally, the idea was that everyone would just have one account and could then engage freely with the rest of the fediverse, but in practice things have developed into a state where stuff is more siloed from the overall fediverse and user accounts are splintered across the various platforms. Instead of one account giving me a good view to all the services, not only do I need separate accounts for loop, Pixelfed, Mastodon etc, I also need various accounts for all the servers. I would much prefer an approach something like Discord uses, where your user account is more or less persistent across the various servers. Having to memorize all those passwords for all the servers is a PITA

I suppose one way I could see myself using this is by sharing interesting accounts to follow from all my other accounts into one single account. So I’d basically use the individual accounts just for “cultivating” more stuff for my “main” account

Finding mastodon federation really limiting and frustrating. Leaving aside having to wait for approval I have to remember the actual server names. Surely some mistake here? Do users have to do that?

Mastodon (and the Fediverse in general) works like email: decentralized servers communicate through standard protocols and every user can post / read information from every other user (except when posts or servers have restricted access).

Just like with email, choosing a server is important but not crucial. You easily can start on any server and then also easily migrate with your content and contacts to another server. It’s like when you move to a big city in another country: first you find whatever allows you to land, then, with time, more local knowledge and contacts, perhaps you’ll find another place in another neighborhood that suits you better.

There are two main ways to find interesting people and interesting conversations: tags and patience.

You can search and follow tags, which will bring topics using those tags to your timeline. Some tags I’m following: linuxaudio, bitwig, plugdata. Some communities create tags to communicate between themselves openly and be found (bonkwave comes to mind). Also, use specific tags in your posts, and that will help you be found by others.

Following hashtags over time will allow you to find authors talking about their creations, authors reporting about these topics, and also people very good at filtering and resharing. These are the people you can start following, read their discussions, and in these discussions you can find more people with common interests (and, probably like you, less invested in posting or less pro in the topic), and your comments will also be seen by like-minded people. This, over time, will form your Mastodon circle of people you follow and follow you for more social reasons, beyond specific topics.

Or at least this is how it worked for me and many people I know. There are many other ways to use Mastodon, just like there are many reasons to join Elektronauts and many ways to use it, your usage may evolve, and so on.

Yay! I suggest you publish an intro about yourself in a post using the #introduction hashtag. And use hashtags in general in your posts because on Mastodon that is an important way to be found (and find) outside of your network. I suspect #elektron is going to be a regular in your posts.
