One good thing about Mastodon is that broad, open, general communities can coexist on the network with focused, gate-kept ones. There are boundaries around the communities, but they’re porus. One groups exclusivity shouldn’t inpinge on another group’s lack of it.

However, managing that flexibility is quite technical, and the Mastodon network creators havn’t done a great job of explaining it, or making it easy to do for newcomers.
