Manual's tip for quickly setting Pattern Length doesn't work?

The Cycles manual, in the Scale Setup section, has a tip that reads:

“Press the [PAGE] key and [TRIG] keys to change the number of steps of the pattern quickly.”

However, unless I’m misunderstanding something, this doesn’t work at all for me.

I press and hold page, then press a trig; all that happens is the trig makes a note sound (if I’m not in grid record mode) or activates a trig (if I’m in grid record mode). But the length of the pattern does not change.

Which means that to change pattern lengths, I have to do it the standard, slow way: Func + Page to open the Scale Setup, select Len, choose a length, press Level/Data, exit out of Scale Setup…

What am I missing about this alleged shortcut? (I’m brand new to this, so I figure I must just be missing something obvious!)

thanks!

Don’t hold the page key, that is just for jumping to the next set of sixteen. Holding would normally be more explicitly described in the manual

If you enter the scale setup and press trig 8 you get 8 steps

If you enter and press page then 8 you would have 24. Pressing page and trig is kinda accurate but would be better as page or trig.

If you entered the mode and pressed just page twice it would give you 32 steps
