I’m trying to do something really simple. I’ve setup my Vermona DRM in midi learn mode and I’m trying to setup a midi kit in the Octatrack to control it.
In MIDI mode and on Track 1, I have Playback settings for Note C0 on Channel 16. When I manually press the corresponding Midi trig (trig 9) while the Octatrack is stopped, it doesn’t seem as though any note information is sent. If I add some trigs while in Grid Record and hit play, then notes are sent and the Vermona responds.
Make sure of two things:
[ul]
[li]you have trigs on your MIDI track 1;[/li]
[li]you have disconnected the track from the sequencer by activating PLAYS FREE in the PATTERN SETTINGS menu (pages 90 to 92 of the manual).[/li]
[/ul]
Shouldn’t I be able to Live Record my patterns while in MIDI mode using trigs 9-16? I can enter them in Grid Record and it works, but not while in Live Record.

Try chromatic mode if you are trying to record a melodic pattern on your midi tracks.
Chromatic definitely works, but in Live Record the result is a series of trigs that are param locked to different notes.
I’d like to assign each midi track to a drum channel (i.e. midi note) on the Vermona, and thenLive Record across the 8 midi tracks so I could later add an LFO to just the hi-hats.
Maybe I’ll try filing a support ticket with Elektron …
I think that you’re hitting the limits of the OT’s MIDI sequencer if you need to do this in real-time. The workaround would be to record as you have been and then copy one track to another before editing them.
It’s worth submitting a feature request to Elektron, but I wouldn’t hold your breath waiting for them to implement it.
I don’t know which model of the DRM the OP has. I looked at the manual of the DRM Mk III and it seems to claim that it can MIDI-learn that notes to trigger its different sounds can arrive on different MIDI channels. I had previously inferred from the OP’s posts that it needed to be different notes on a single MIDI channel.
I thought that LIVE RECORDING on the OT MIDI sequencer only went to the active MIDI track. So the OP would still be stuck with a problem. Can you confirm?
Just to clarify, I’m looking for a way to record MIDI tracks on the OT in the same way Live Record works on the Machinedrum. For the MD, you can live record trigs across the 16 tracks simultaneously. I was hoping I could use the trig buttons on the OT (buttons 9-16) to live record in similar way while in MIDI mode.
So, no external MIDI controller required … hope that makes more sense.

Got it now… I just tried it out and just like you said, it was not working as expected.
I looked in the manual on page 110 and it says “When in MIDI mode and neither GRID RECORDING or LIVE RECORDING mode is active, the [TRIG] Keys can be used to trig tracks that are disconnected from the sequencer.”
I tried it but unfortunately also will not produce the desired behavior as it seems to be for playing only and not recording.
bummer.

I think we understand, but I’m 99 % sure it can’t be done using the Octatrack. You can trig MIDI tracks that are disconnected from the sequencer, but not while you’re recording. You can record multiple notes to a single track, but not notes to separate tracks.
I tried to think of something like that, too, (Out to In, then Thru to Vermona) but again I believe that it’s possible to send such triggers over MIDI but not for the note values to be recorded to more than one OT track at a time, which is what the OP requires.
If an audio track and a MIDI track share the same MIDI channel, the MIDI track will block the audio track from sending out data while the audio track will block the MIDI track from receiving data.
I’ve been hooking up my mfb-301 pro to my OT today and came across the exact issue confronted in the OP’s first post. As I understand it, it is not possible to trig a specific midi note (say C2, midi channel 1) by hitting the MIDI Trigs (ie. steps 9-16), and you can only do so by using chromatic mode. Bit of a disappointment, as I thought I could tap out the eight drum channels on the mfb on steps 9-16.
More generally, what is the point of the ‘MIDI Trigs’ in steps 9-16 if they don’t do anything!?
In midi mode, grid recording off, trigs 9-16 triggers Plays Free midi tracks. You have to create your tracks, placing a trig with the right note, and activate Plays Free in Pattern Settings (Fn+Bank, grid rec off).
If you want to record mfb notes > chromatic mode.
Can’t you change Mfb notes / channels so that you can use them easily in chromatic mode, on one channel ?
