@sezare56 Alright I thought of a way to wire up something to test. I sent the Main Outs of the Octatrack to my SP404 and recorded a stereo sample of the output, made sure to use a track with very obvious panning (that I can hear fine using the headphone output of the OT into my audio interface btw). Then played that back from the SP404 and the same problem happens - there isn’t any information on the right channel at all, just the left has sound.
Tested other sounds on the SP, those work fine so the SP and the cables are good.

Just to be sure, can you check that you use main outs and not main L and Cue L ?
Other thing to try : hard pan right Track 1 with one sample, and hard pan left track 2 with another sample.
That would rule out any phase canceling effect.
On the mixer page, set headphones to full main instead of Main + Cue, just to check everything is ok.
Yeah i’m definitely using the 2 main outs and not main L and cue L.
I’ve been using a few projects to check this, including demo projects, but the main one i’ve been using has the panning assigned to a random LFO so its super obvious if a track is missing because there are big gaps of silence if its just the left channel.

Ok. It’s starting to seriously look like a bug. But with OT, there are so many places to f** things up…
Another attempt: no scene assigned?
I have a scene in B and the default in A and its the same with the slider at either side, problem persists in several different projects including the demo projects.
So if you have headphones you have other monitoring options than your soundcard!
You didn’t clearly answered to that so please, once again, is the signal correct if you plug your headphones directly in L then R Main outputs?

So far with the interface using 2 mono cables I only get the left channel, into the SP404 with two mono cables I only get the left channel, with stereo headphone cable into the left output I get what sounds like the correct headphone output and in the right output I get what sounds like a mono version. I’m assuming this is not normal behavior?
Although now the unit is completely frozen upon startup, won’t respond to any button presses. Booted into demo mode and that works, but trying to boot into the regular mode is just 100% locked up.
I have a replacement unit coming on Tuesday so this might be a moot point, but the unit appears to be completely bricked at the moment. Demo mode opens fine, but as soon as the card is back in it still loads into demo mode but is completely locked up (no buttons work at all).
Booted up into test mode and the only weird result is ATA: [NO INT] which upon further research indicates a failed CF card - i’ve just been using the one that comes with the unit. It also sounds like this is a super common problem this year. I’ve ordered a 64GB card in case my next one has the same issue and just to have more storage space, and a card reader to see if I can read the card and recover any of the projects I made.
I’ll post an update here whether things are working or not since this forum came up a ton in my research and maybe this thread will help someone out in the future.

Thanks. Not normal behaviour.
Probably causes a phase cancelation.
Have fun with the replacement unit!
Yeah right channel must be completely getting phased cancelled out due to this weird output. Thanks for the help!
BTW the new CF card fixed the frozen system, so the issue with the freeze was due to a failed CF card. Seems like I got a double-lemon with a messed up main output AND broken CF card.

Aww that’s a tough one! I’ve not heard of any defects like that in Elektron products, I’m sure they happen but just never heard of em. To have two issues with a new unit, damn thats unlucky.
Hope it doesn’t put you off too much!

Hey everyone! Just giving a final update now that i’ve received my replacement unit. On the new unit the main output is working perfectly as expected (along with the cue outputs and headphone output).
It seems like this genuinely was just a factory defect where the main outputs were messed up. Also the freezing issue I had was indeed caused by the CF card that came with the unit failing after only a week of use. I’m probably not even going to bother with the CF card that shipped with the new unit and just use the 64GB SanDisk one I bought.
I’m very glad I purchased the unit through Amazon because not only is returning free, but they shipped the replacement before I even had to ship out the original unit. Not sure what Elektron’s process would have been like but Amazon’s was a breeze.
I appreciate all the help!

Good news! Have fun!
Abusing crossfader and slices is recommended.

I advise you to register the lemon on Elektron.se just to make sure they keep track of it.
But it’s good that you were treated this well after your 2x bad luck.
And I also only use SanDisk, good choice
Once the CF card is in the OT, try to put it out the least possible, using the OT as a USB disk instead.

For the record, I have a very old OT (from 2013) with its original CF card which hasn’t failed yet. But if you have a better one, I guess there’s no reason not to use it
And yeah, as mentioned above, try to never remove it once you install the new one. The pins on the connector are very fragile.

I’m sure most of the time they’re reliable but it sounds like Elektron admits they had a bad batch of CF cards this year from when I looked online, and I have a feeling that this unit is likely from the same batch since it came from the same supplier within a short time frame.
Thanks for the advice about the CF card, I actually don’t even own a CF reader so the only way I can load files is from USB disk mode haha.

Getting this issue with my Digitone Keys. Having weird panning issues, made all the more confusing as i have substantial hearing loss in my left ear.
Putting the headphone jack in the Main out L i get “Normal” behavior (my left ear is my bad ear, with moderate to severely moderate hearing loss from 250db-4000db), headphone jack in Main Out R ( right ear is fine) is still showing up in the left ear… Jack pulled half out goes kind of Mono in the Middle…
I have DN running into OT, and was scouring OT for the reason why it sounded panned pretty hard Left… all the while doubting myself because of my shitty left ear…
DN Headphone out sounds beautiful, same with OT, but i had sampled stuff off the DN Main Outs and the samples were all screwy.
Quite the mind fuck.
So, i think i have a bad Main Out R jack on the DN Keys…
Which is a bummer that im not sure what to do about…
Ah. Sorry for your left ear. I have an extra sensitivity from my left ear usually from unexpected high levels, but I don’t know if I have a loss. Probably…
Meters can help, but if sounds good, wtf !
All mono audio outputs in the “left channel”.
Mono jacks use TS connections:
- Tip = Audio
- Sleeve = Ground
Stereo devices use TRS connectors wired up as:
- Tip = Left Channel Audio
- Ring = Right Channel Audio
- Sleeve = Ground.
No matter whether the device is outputting audio from the left or right channel over a mono output, it will always be on the “left channel” (tip) if you connect it to a stereo device (like headphones).
Now, some devices use “balanced” mono outputs, which use TRS (or XLR) connectors.
With those devices, the output is:
- Tip = Hot Audio (positive)
- Ring = Cold Audio (negative, or inverted phase)
- Sleeve = Ground
Elektron devices have balanced connectors on their outputs.
So you need to make sure that you are using:
- TS cables to a mono input
- Dual-TS to TRS Y-cable to a stereo input
- TRS cables to a balanced TRS mono input
But not:
- TRS balanced mono to a TRS stereo input jack.
- TRS balanced mono to a TS mono input.
Now these are not hard rules, as there are some situations where you’d be fine just using TRS cables for all connections regardless (because the cold audio should just be sent to ground); but if you’re experiencing panning (phasing) issues that’s the first place I’d look.
Either set your interface/mixer inputs to mono if they are not already, or swap out any TRS cables for TS ones.
