Although knowing frap there is probably like 100 electrolytic capacitors in it which are generally kind of timebombs for a repair bill

Ha, good to know

What is Flip Sync ?

A sort of sync done between two oscillator signals ( primary and secondary ) that is distinct from “hard sync”.

Hard Sync :

The primary signal ( top ), resets the secondary signal to restart from its initial state/postion when it ( the primary signal ) goes past a certain threshold voltage ( at the dotted lines ).

Flip Sync :

This is less extreme. The primary signal ( top ), only causes the secondary signal to reverse direction ( flip ) when it ( the primary signal ) goes past a certain threshold voltage ( at the dotted lines ).

Both of these syncs, are useful when the primary signal has a lower frequency than the secondary signal.

Notice a couple of differences.
1 ) The secondary signal continues to flow, and is not reset, with flip sync, meaning the frequency difference of the two signals makes a continual change in the output wave shape.

2 ) With hard sync the output signal changes with a voltage discontinuity, whereas the flip sync output signal stays at the same output voltage but switches the direction of change. The flip sync signal change is less “harsh”, involving less introduction of a square wave higher overtone frequencies.

These graphs are screen shots from the “Frap Talk” video on flip sync for their Brenso and now Magnolia oscillators.

EDIT : Typo

I dropped a reference to the Magnolia in the Gear in Progress thread and indeed i just got an e-mail from Frap with a progress report.

They say that it will be available between October and November … so just a couple months left.

They should have called it Frap Sync.

It’s shipping now.

I played with this really briefly at Buchla & friends and it sounded great. For some reason I had it in my head that this synth was digital so I was kind of surprised by how good it sounded.

What a gorgeous instrument. If I didn’t have a polybrute12 and a murmux adept I would be all over it.

If it was four octaves I would be.

It’s sound great and looks super fun… I do find it odd they are touting it as an analog fm synth. I mean it is an analog synth with 2 osc and through zero fm but there are other synths that also do that and no one is calling them an fm synth.

But yeah minor rant aside seems like an incredible synth. It’s fully discrete circuit design from my understanding which is quite rare these days.

A day back i put up a Sonic State video on the Magnolia from the Buchla & Friends show.

Plenty of modulation options, and lots of flexibility. Despite have no screen, only the number display, and all the controls, it still looks straight forward and fast to work with.

Same. I saw a video presentation from Buchla & Friends where they stated that this is the first and only analog synth with thru zero fm “as far as we know”, which is ridiculous. TEO-5 is an analog synth with thru zero fm, and if they spent years developing and building Magnolia, they should know. Not saying that TEO-5 and Magnolia are basically the same, but framing Magnolia this way is misleading and dubious.

Or maybe it’s the only one ‘as far as they know.’ Doesn’t have to be dubious. I don’t own either, but I get no sense of Frap Tools being sleazy about anything

I agree that they should be aware that the latest Sequential synth has this as one of its most prominent and distinctive features. But yeah, probably they just spent a few years in a cave, crunching to get this out, and didn’t have the time to stay updated on what’s come out since. It would help to do a quick check before you do marketing though.

Too pricey for me, but looks and sounds gorgeous and very fun to program.

The teo-5 is not fully analog, it is a hybrid synth with a digital amp section, so not a true analog poly synth.

That is why it is only $1500. If it was fully analog with thru zero it would be substantially harder to make and much more expensive.

The dedicated FM envelope on this makes it a little more fm-ish.
