Seems like we should be asking you that. ![]()
The answer is “yes” lol
For example, there’s a wavefolder, and if the wavefolder is in use, the additive Wavetables actually gives what one would expect from a Wavetable.
Comb- and Comb+ provide Karplus Strong
There are samples, but one doesn’t even need them
Three types of noise (White Noise with granularity, S&H, Tuned Noise) …
FM Tone / FM Drum do all kind of metallic stuff (cymbals, hihats) …
(If one just listens to the drums here … https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=14MolI9eogU … of course this video wasn’t a “let’s sound like Perkons” though)
In terms of sound design it’s no contest. But that’s not what it’s all about in these cases though imho. Perkons thrives at how playable it is in pretty much everything it can do. Not even close to the sound design universe Digitone possesses but that’s not really the point of perkons.
Not that DNII is not performative of course. But different.
So it all depends a bit, and this applies to the MD too. If you prefer infinite sound design depths, go MD / DNII. If you want a pretty much knob per function performance drum synth, Perkons.
… but since the question is Machinedrum vs. Perkons, this aspect (four sequencer rows etc.) doesn’t seem to count to or being a priority to OP ![]()
Not specified so I’m not going to make that assumption :). If it’s a comparison purely from a sound design perspective , it’s no contest obviously.
The perkons is more hands on. Spazedrum has 8 voices , 4 analog four digital can run together.
An analog synth and digital synth.
The Md and Perkons have para locka
The spazedrum uses control sequences.
Rather than a ctrl all the spaze has a morph sound and morph sequencer setup. The modulation capabilities of the spazedrum when used with control sequences is what places it above both the perkons and Md for me.
I just sold a grand’s worth of kit on eBay / Reverb, which included a Digitakt 1 so the Perkons is looking ever more tempting.
I think I am finished with the little black boxes approach. Although menu diving, I am enjoying MD so much. I realised I need to have a lot more hands on fun with the certain kit I own - rehearse and then record the outcome. The MD is an absolute riot after setting up a lot patterns and sequences.
Thanks!
In this case the drone comes from the Digitone - going through the Space Echo (+ Space Echo’s spring reverb in the middle of the track) - routed through the Strymon Big Sky (Cloud Reverb / Nimbus).
I did some Perkons only droning here on the lead voice (also pushed through the Strymon) here:
(With long decay, an LFO and some FX you can drone quite extensively
)

My take on the Perkons:
