It doesn’t make sense to me that the ball would just sit on the metal protruders. Maybe a better term for protruders is “leads”
I think I fixed it. I discovered the ball was below the spring as I removed another loose button. I puddy’d the whole button encasement down to keep it in its place then buttressed the bottom side of the plate on the north and south sides of the hole where the buttons go in order to force the whole button encasement down while the spring pushes the button up. I used some kind of tough 1/6 inch felt material used to stick under furniture so ya don’t scratch your floor. It has a strong adhesive side to it. Cut that into 1 inch X 1/6 inch pieces. 4 total. 2 for each button. It’s working now. Hope that made sense. Happy to elucidate for anyone wondering what just happened.
If it’s still making contact when you push it and not getting stuck on the way back up, then it’s probably fine for now. I would be careful not to do anything that compromises the ability to desolder it from the PCB, but otherwise as long as it’s working then it’s better than a broken button.
If you’re going to keep this MD, you may want to consider starting now to try and source a replacement button. I don’t know if elektron will have it in their warehouse, but I’d probably imagine you’ll have to replace it at some point and if you can get the part on hand and ready before it’s an issue, then that will make your life a lot easier.
Last I heard supplies were really low on MD parts so as time goes on it’s gonna be even more difficult to get that button.
Good thing that what you did worked though.

Below. Same buttons on OT MKI, MnM, probably A4 and AR MKI.
The pressure on the button push the ball and makes contact between 2 metal pieces.
These can move if too hot when you desolder, no more contact.

Hello Fellas, anyone knows why sometimes the machinedrum does not receive samples, it says “error unhandled checksum” ?
I remember once I had this problem, but i can’t remember how i solved it …
