A few of us are coming up from Cornwall
I’ll be there!
(Also no disrespect @Jukka but personally I think these shows can each have their own threads)
The combined format has worked very well before :
I respectfully agree, would rather Machina Bristronica has its own thread as it’s a very unique show crafted with the love and care of the people of Elevator Sound here in Bristol. I’m not going to the other events and feel having them all in one thread, with the way the forum is laid out, would dilute the experience somewhat. But what do I know?
Likely that will work – Machina Bristronica seems a popular show.
The problem with a smaller show, is they don’t always work as threads. Knobcon 2024 died i was one of a few that posted for it, and it was a dynamic show this year.
Let’s try something else maybe. How about i change this title to 2024, and redirect down the thread ? Or someone start a new thread if you want.
Changing the thread title would be great! Even just removing the year entirely would do nicely, as I’m sure it’ll be a thing for years to come!
Edit: thanks so much!!
Yep. Hoping to be there on the Sunday-looking forward to it!!
I’ve never been to Bristol … is it pretty small / easy to get around ( walking) as there’s a lot of choice when it comes to hotels / airbnb…
Any recommendations?
Would also likely wander around the streets for graffiti.
I like the idea, couple questions.
I wonder if plugging in Gameboy carts would create some kind of glitch effect that can be used for textures.
And
Will those carts eventually need to be blown into to make them work, just like old school game carts. In other words, I wonder how reliable they are?
-Off topic side note. Anyone know if any studies have been done to explain why blowing on NES carts worked? It’s wild to me that pre-internet Google help, blowing into the carts was something people across the world just naturally did to fix a game that wasnt booting up. Anyone else ever think how crazy all that is?
Befaco is at the show again, so on topic. ( I like having this last year mirror in this thread. )
The cartridge specification is available as a zip file at this site, in Documentation section under the label Cartridge Design Toolbox. I’m stuck on a phone so won’t open the docs at the moment but the interface will just be powers and ground, some audio signals in and out, and some CV controls, certainly IN but maybe OUT too, and maybe clocks, and a hello or active signal. Digital cartridges need to be able to do the analog interface. They are made to be hot swappable, but the mother module probable just passes a dry signal ( with volume control ) when no cart is plugged in. There definitely is a transition time when you plug something in, that may or may not be well behaved depending on the cartridge design. Just me thinking – it would be fun to have a design that will start in different random states each time it is plugged in, and perhaps give an intentional wonky response for a short time when it has just been plugged in.
Since Befaco is at the show, new cartridges are certainly possible.
Thank you for the very detailed and informative response!
The central part of Bristol is relatively compact, and yes it’s very walkable. If you want to see the graffiti, the best places are probably in the centre, Stokes Croft, which is just north of the city centre, and Bedminster, which is south of the centre. Where to stay probably depends on your budget, but if you are just coming for the weekend staying near the harbour might be a good option.
I was there in July for a week only, so take this with a grain of salt. I found public transit somewhat frustrating. Buses have issues everywhere, but in Bristol they have a single door, and the driver does full transactions, so a stop can take forever. The commuter train lines are subject to frequent delays and cancellations. It can be hilly, the bike infrastructure is spotty, and there are lots of freeways and car sewers making it harder for pedestrians.
The venue is in Easton but a short walk from the centre (albeit not a particularly pleasant one). I was staying about a mile east, still in Easton. I would say that staying in the vicinity of Document, or somewhat to the east or south, will be fine. You probably want to avoid being north of the highway, if on foot. The harbour is fairly touristed (this might be better in October than in July) and might be noisy overnight.
For those who are going, I would appreciate a report if you come across Stochastic Instruments, who had a prototype of a new module (Strange-R Things) at the last MB, but have said nothing about it in the intervening year. They’re on the list of exhibitors…!
I would say it’s not quite in Easton, St Judes is the area, between the motorway and Easton. Easton was an area I lived in that estate agents had been saying was ‘Up and Coming’ for 15 years. Great community with Duvet Vous (deep house) nights at the Queens Head and all sorts going on at The Chelsea.
Bristol is very hilly (kept me lean for years), but a lot of the buses now have tap in, tap out payment methods, which makes it easier.
There are major artery roads leading from the centre that will allow you to walk to most areas of the city, it’s spread out more than you might think!
I lived in Bristol for 7 years, still have family there and love it. Going to Bristronica and staying with my sister in Bedminster - will use taxi’s to shuffle about due to the location I’m staying in (other side of the river) and because I just left hospital on Wednesday!
Excited to hang out with other nerds and awkwardly ask questions to people I’ve watched on You Tube…
Wahey, hello fellow Bedminster-ian! Love it round here. I’m just off North Street.
hello from Totterdown
Well, I live up in the hills now (20 miles north of Oxford), but I lived all over. Southville, St Werburghs, Easton, Greenbank, St George, St Pauls, Horfield and Montpelier!
My brother in law is one of the cyder riders from Dean Lane skate park! He is a proper Bedminster boy!
Thank you for the geographic correction, and enjoy Machina Bristonica, all of you who are going! I am jealous.
