I am glad you did it man
I got a DELL XPS 15 9560 two years ago for around 1000e - 16Go 512gb SSD i7
Nothing too fancy but it does the job. I had to ‘clean’ it and removed lots of useless things and spent quite some times to troubleshoot audio issues. Asio4All fixed it. I am not sure if I would recommend it tho. It was good value for its money.
I would choose a mac over a pc if the price is correct.
In conclusion, if you choose a PC, get ready to get your hands dirty.
At those prices I would have gone for that over the Air too. But that’s based on my subjective evaluation of the price difference between the two 13" models
Me too!
The wait is going to be long, but life is good having something exciting to look forward to.
Along with the obvious better keyboard, the real key factor was the 2ghz base clock, as that will help with sustained audio processing. Plus the faster SSD is a big deal since I use Omnisphere.
I’m a bit surprised how negative the general comments are towards this model, due to the expectations for the 14”. As I said this model looks to be ideal for what I was looking for.
I think 13" is a good size for being mobile. I believe that was the size of Macbook Pro provided to me by one of my recent past employers. By itself it’s a bit small for working at an office, but they gave me a nice huge monitor to plug into so I could show stuff more easily to colleagues.
For travel though and general mobility it’s great.
The only thing I didn’t like about it was complete absence of USB ports. The employer provided a Thunderbolt to USB hub for that but it was an extra thing I had to worry about and make sure I didn’t lose every time I took that little MBP anywhere.
Wait a minute, does this mean I will get this sooner than May 14th?
My other order for the MBA just sat on processing for 7 days before I cancelled it. While this order is already at “preparing to ship”. I’M NOT READY! If this thing shows up in a few days I think I’ll pass out from excitement
Edit: Got an email confirming delivery on 5/8 which is this Friday! Sweet!
Edit 2: One thing that surprises me is that the higher tier MBP model with 16gb RAM and 512gb SSD is $600 less this year, and yet everyone is obsessed with bad mouthing the $1299 model with 8th gen processors.
The 14’ could have impacted the sales of the 16’ this is why I think Apple did not release for now.
I am not a fan of big laptop cause at the end you end up using them as a desktop and with the new ipad getting more and more powerful I don’t see much the point. I think the MBP13 is a perfect combination between power and portability.
If there was no new MBP I was going to get a Mac Mini with top spec for £2000, it is like a Mini Mac pro at an amazing price but with the coming Imac 23’ I will wait now a bit longer and see what Apple has to offer in June.
If anyone is comparing MBA to MBP, this is a great video that compares a 2020 MBA to a 2019 MBP head to head.
It shows directly how the thermals affect performance by design.
Since we’re all mostly in agreement that for music, 13" 2020 MBP > 13" 2020 AIR, this is interesting:
Also, I’m eager to find some benchmarks of this exclusive i5 vs i7. Aside from clock speed, it seems cache size (6MB vs 8MB) is the only difference. I reckon for most folks the i5 2ghz with 1TB will be a better $1999 spent than an i7 2.3ghz with 512GB
I did find this Geekbench 5 result of the new 2020 MBP i5. (note that the 4 port 13" model name/code is 16,2. The 2 port is 16,3. The 16" is 16,1)
It’s a one off, though, so we will have to wait to see how more machines form an average.
But that’s a great single core score of 1271 (my 16" MBP 8 core gets 1099), and the multicore score is 68% of my 8 core 9th gen i7 16", so 10th gen Intel chips definitely doing their thing:
So while not 6 core… the 13" with the new 10th gen 4 core CPUs are almost as fast (82%) as the 6 core 9th gen were in Geekbench 5. And a good bit of that is GPU difference, I’ll try to find more details on CPU vs CPU.
Wow - thanks for this. I was also trying to track down what the custom CPU has, and searching Geekbench didn’t yield much.
If true that number you found is fantastic, but I do have my doubts.
What I did do was use the waybackmachine to look at the past apple pages on April 30th - https://web.archive.org/web/20200430000959/https://www.apple.com/mac/
I found a common benchmark that Apple did with Logic Pro where the new MBP is claimed to be 2.6x faster, with the 2019 model as 2.3x. So my prediction for CPU performance was (2.6 / 2.3) or 13% faster.
I think it will end up being 5-10% faster because if that benchmark you found is true, they would say a LOT more about it.
I think the new part will just be a 28w peak vs 25w, but would love it if there was more to it.
It’s telling that the i7 is an opt-in selection this time, because for “bursty” work loads there is no benefit (IOW it won’t feel any faster).
Mine just passed customs in Korea, and is on a plane, hopefully it will be here Friday (fingers crossed).
Edit: This is a VERY good sign…
Edit 2: Also this just popped up https://www.notebookcheck.net/i5-1038G7-vs-i5-1035G4_12176_11409.247596.0.html so it is 28W, and has some serious grunt for a mobile part.
Edit 3: This is crazy if this is the 2020 13" model benchmarks. It’s an average of 1239 for single core, and I know we’re just geeking out here, but that’s the fastest SC performance of ANY Mac https://browser.geekbench.com/mac-benchmarks
I know benchmarks are just that, but still it’s going to be a big deal if it’s true.
Best regards,
Gino
Did you guys verify if these newer Macbooks are using the T2 security chip?
This caused audio problems in last year’s models - obviously not what you want if you’re going to depend heavily on Omnisphere:
my 16" has the T2 and I’ve not had any issues, (using MOTU Ultralite MK4 over USB with latest driver, and 10.15.4)
I was able to test Omnisphere on the 2019 MBA, and although it was a bit too much for the Air to handle it did technically run OK. I did notice a bit more audio in/out latency from the DT vs my Windows notebook (about 200 samples total at 48Khz). It’s possible that this difference was T2 causing delay, but I don’t have a way to confirm that. When I get my MBP and it has the same difference, I’l look further into it.
And yes, the 2019 MBA has the T2 chip (https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT208862)
Sorry if you mentioned it before, but did you say you’re using Overbridge?
Doesn’t look like AdamJay is. Perhaps that’s one difference between the latency you found vs. his machine.
I am. Overbridge with A4 MK1 and AK.
But yea, Overbridge is gonna add latency for sure.
My MacBook Pro is being delivered today! I guess I got lucky as I ordered it as quick as I could when I heard the announcement.
Sounds like the performance is a solid bump. Can’t wait to test it for myself on Bitwig, overbridge, DT, and Omnisphere
Also the speakers and mic are upgraded on the 10th gen models so that’s another nice thing that wasn’t clear in the announcement.
On this graph which 2019 13” CPU are they comparing? I can’t find the source of this graph.
The 2019 had two different CPU options on 4 port models.
It’s a good illustration of why Apple is rumored to switch to ARM processors in laptops in the future.
Intel has been much slower to produce the custom i5 and i7s that Apple orders than what Apple can do with their ARM suppliers. The result has been underwhelming refreshes on their base models (8th gen for $1299 in 2020?)
It’s unfortunate for us that Apple has outgrown Intel to a certain extent. I’m not looking forward to an ARM transition, even though it’ll surely start with lower end laptops before moving up to the Pro models. How many more intel revisions of the MBP will we see? Only 2 or 3?
If iOS ran all the software I need, the new iPad Pro would be a strong possibility. It’s very impressive performance.
For MacOS, ARM could be great performance too, but stability/compatibility is unknown. That’s one reason Apple may go to AMD.
