But currently no overbridge on a M1 device, right?
wow even Resolume for visuals seems to be working okay’ish on the Air M1… tough decision – so afraid of fan noise because of Intel, AMD and Nvidia I hope 2023 we are all in for passive cooled high performance!
No overbridge yet no
Until now I have not run into anything the Base M1 Air could not handle, it is really facinating. Even 8gb of seem to be not limiting at all. I have a friend who uses the same base model M1 Air and he renders 3D Stuff. This Machines are really blazing fast and we can only hope that every company is fast with updating their software. because if all stuff is running native it gets even faster and there will be no need for faster machines. I mean look at this. What more do anyone want?
What 3D software is your friend using?
I think it´s Fusion, Cinema and Blender if Iam right.
Fan noise has not been an issue on my 13 inch MacBook Pro, but I haven’t really pushed it yet.
I suspect it won’t be an issue though because the M1 chips create much less heat than Intel’s. I often push Reaper to the max with all types of plugins so I don’t want any throttling to occur.
could you try running Resolume for me? There is a demo version – push it real hard!
Been reading on Ableton forum that they’re a bit behind in terms of performance upgrades… even 11 is said to be as CPU hungry as 10.x. So … could you maybe also check Ableton?
Sorry I have not enough time to get into the programm…but if you look here, they are already testing on M1. If it runs on the Pro it runs on the Air. They are almost on par.
Totally off topic but anyone using Mac mini? I really don’t need a laptop and have a ton of monitors lying around. $899 for a M1 with 8gb ram and a 512 SSD sounds perfect.
Never mind, just looked above in this thread. Looks promising.
Lol wtf? This is ridiculous
It is kind of
What NI stuff have you tried? I had a brief look a few weeks ago for anyone commenting on using maschine or komplete/kontakt with the m1, but turned up nothing. Also, did you go 8gb or 16gb?
M1 MBA (16 GB) here and have tried most Komplete plugins in Live except for Battery and Guitar Rig (just haven’t installed them yet) without issue. Coming from a 9 year old 27” iMac so it’s been a nice boost.
One odd thing I’ve noticed is that CPU load in Live gets up to the 30% range really quickly but it takes A LOT to get it to move much over that.
8 GB of ram would be a bad decision, even if they do handle memory better. You can’t upgrade.
Have you noticed any throttling or overheating yet? The numbers I’ve read are good so far but I’m dubious about the longevity of a fanless laptop
Nothing yet. I just started using it a few days ago and I don’t generally push it too hard anyways, I’ll generally only use a few plugins at a time and do a lot of stuff on my Norns. I had a 9 yr old iMac and 8 yr old MBA and wanted to see if I could replace both with the new MBA and so far so good.
Only issue I’m having so far is using an external monitor through a Caldigit TS3 + dock. When I sleep the computer it won’t recognize the monitor whatsoever when it wakes and have to restart to get it back. Works fine if I just plug the monitor into the MBA instead of the dock. Spent 5hrs with Apple tech support the other day jumping through hoops (even reinstalling the OS) to find out from a “senior” advisor that the issue is known to Apple engineers and they’re working on a fix.
Take 16 if you can but 8 is absolutley fine. I have 8. and watch the youtube videos. There are a lot you really dont need more
How are you getting on with the M1 Air and 8gig?
I’m desperate for a new iMac but need the 27” so still waiting for the M1 to land. In the mean time I’m really tempted to get an Air mainly for Ableton (I’m not a big plug-in user to be honest). But also need it to run fairly large photoshop documents when I need to for work.
8gig seems bonkers but guess everything’s changed with this new m1
I went 16gb direct from Apple with the M1. Non-upgradable ram (think that’s correct?) just didn’t feel right. I’ve also only turned it on twice since February so I may have wasted the extra couple hundred.
