Luna Display / Sidecar

Anyone using a Luna Display in their setup?

How is it working with an iPad, does it give touch control or just stylus like Sidecar…

Just been looking into it, seems you can now do mac2mac in any formation using their device.

Its making me think of using an iMac as the primary machine sending to my old MacBook pro.

That way the iMac can just be out of the way and if it works, will give me more power but maintain a bit of portability.

I’ve been using duet display and it’s ok.
If I had better way of integrating my ipad into my computer set I’d definitely use duet more often. Either way, it works great for what it is. But keep in mind the small screen size, gotta choose what you want on there wisely

Thanks for reply, looked into Duet just now. Tough to work out which option to go with but leaning to the Luna Display based on reviews I’ve seen but not conclusive either way.

Luna Display came back to my email to advise that it does perform touch gestures on an iPad: Luna supports basic input via the touch screen of the iPad.
You can double tap to double click and to single tap for a single click. Two-finger pinch zooming and two-finger panning gestures are also supported with Luna. Touch panning can be used for scrolling.

I do use Luna Display in the configuration you describe. I remotely access my studio mac with a MacBook over WiFi. I have found the current Mac to Mac solution does have some limitation. For example, the latest software does not work correctly with some VSTs. In my case, I cannot remotely adjust the knobs on Sylenth but Spire works perfectly. It is very nice to be able to work in another area with a MacBook as most things work well but this could not be my only solution. The iPad Luna app does not have this problem but it’s hard to do everything on an iPad. The iPad also work very well as a second screen that you can touch control.

The Luna Display graphics are superior when compared to VNC style screen sharing.

Also, Luna does not share audio. I use AUNetSend on my studio mac and AUNetReceive on the MacBook running Luna Display. I use AUNetReceive with Audio Hijack on the MacBook. The audio is a little out of sync (delayed) with the graphics but it doesn’t really bother me.

Cheers for the input and helpful that you’ve done the config I’m looking at… have you tried the Duet one? How inferior are the graphics - I’m pretty comfortable working on a MacBook pro 2012 non-retina…

I guess that native/m4l stuff would be ok? Perhaps VST’s that don’t play ball could be controlled via a midi device that you could still assign whilst using the macbook?

I have not tried Duet but I have tried others. I think one of the Luna benefits is that it uses the GPU and renders the graphics on the device you are using so they are super sharp even without retina. The others looks more like a lesser quality video playing on your device.

I am not really sure which things work and which do not but I find it very useful for arranging because most standard commend tend to work in DAWs like Ableton and Logic. Oddly enough, the Logic EQ does not work - can’t move an EQ node around. I did reach out to Luna and they were very helpful but were unable to resolve my issue at the time. I’m hoping it will get fixed in an update since the iPad works. It’s also possible my config is weird so it may work for you.

The remote MIDI device is a good idea. Maybe I’ll give it a try.

Seems some odd behaviour, put an order in and looking forward to testing it out.

can you link LUNA software ? can’t find it…
is it alternative to iPad Duet, right ?

If you’re using an old MacBook Pro to control an iMac, what’s wrong with the built in screen sharing in full screen?

I use duet as a 2nd monitor, but it’s really to keep up a webpage or a pdf. Not to use as a main display/control surface for another unit.
