but your issue could have been simple gain staging, device agnostic, you know?
This could be a 44.1 vs 48 kHz thing going on. I don’t have a windows machine rn. So what happens on my Mac is that when I connect the tv it detects that the tv requires 48khz and changes all the Mac internal processing to 48khz. Now whatever I play on anything ( YT,VLC), it will internally get converted to 48khz before going to the TV. I feel in your case this switch might not be happening which can cause all sorts of problems. Also bit depth is a factor too since different bit depths can change how a digital device reproduces level. Most of this wouldn’t matter if u use the analog route but on a digital signal (usb) it def would.
Afaik, the DT, DN and rest work at 44.1khz so hence maybe you don’t encounter the problem since the switch from 44.1 to 48 is not required
Maybe there is a way to change windows to 48khz internally but I can’t remember how. Get ASIO4ALL if you don’t have it, this will def allow you to change samp rate and bit depth. If I remember correctly you can add other audio devices to this driver.

Turn the input gain on TV down it defaults to +12db

As has been noted, applies only to AB. I did try it, though, with no difference.
A thing came to mind. Phones/tabs can connect too via usb. Tho not all work apparently (mine does).
Worth connecting yours to it, selecting audio out to TV and playing something on YouTube.
Cause if that works well, we know the culprit!
I did try that but it failed to send audio to the TV and continued to play sound out its own speaker. It’s a mid-range Android. Assume it varies by device, as you say.
OK this is weird… just got home, tried it again, and today… no clipping. Literally nothing has changed. No updates of any kind on either the laptop or TV. Same process as before, exact same sounds being recorded.
This ties with what Elektron support told me, that they’ve seen this issue before, but don’t know reliable reproduction steps i.e. is intermittent.
So the clipping’s gone (at least for now; perhaps next time I switch it on it’ll be back) BUT the issue I’m left with is the loudness. All sound from my laptop to the TV is really, really loud. Adjusting the laptop volume (i.e. the TV as an output device’s volume) makes no difference at all. Nor does the threshold control on the TV > recording > threshold.
I can mitigate this when sampling things from YouTube, audio players etc. since, as someone above noted, they have their own dedicated volume controls. But I’m curious: shouldn’t lowering the laptop volume directly affect the volume of the sound coming from it into the TV, when the TV is hosted as an audio interface?

I just got my TV the other day, and have had this happen multiple times (on MacOS). I thought it was clipping too at first, but it was definitely some other artifact. Each time it has “magically” fixed itself as well. Last time it happened, it seemed to behave after I restarted the virtual instrument I was using. Super strange, but I think it’s an issue with bitrate somewhere in the chain.
No. Because when an audio interface is connected to a computer, it bypasses windows volume controls (those are for the inbuilt speakers or headphone output of the computer). When an interface is connected, the audio interface is the one in charge of the volume of the system. Hope that helps explain.
Ah that makes sense, thanks. In which case, what would be the normal means of controlling the input volume into the TV from the laptop? As discussed, some sources (e.g. YT) have their own volume control. But should there in theory be some control on the TV that mitigates this volume? I would have thought the ext input gain, but as discussed that’s for AB only not USB.
Late news… the clipping is back! Oh well.
Samplers usually come with an input gain so you can ensure the signal isn’t clipping. I can’t speak for the TV as I don’t have one…
Edit: ah so it’s got an input gain for the analog inputs but not for the USB. Interesting
perhaps there’s some digital math magic in there, recording floating point so it cannot clip but somehow there’s a bug or something that’s interfering with that idk I’m no big city software engineer ![]()
Yeah it’s weird that it’s for AB only - seems a weird choice.
I am a software developer and would love to get hands on with the TV source code. Alas, not sure Elektron are going to open-source it any time soon ![]()
