Loop Jam Battle

Hi everyone,

I’m offering a new battle format for those who don’t have much time (because kids / family / job / laziness / alcool / drug / poney / life ) or just for those who like to keep things simple and quick.

The concept is simple:

  • elektron gear
  • a tempo
  • a selection of samples
  • a single 8-bar loop
  • a 40-bar jam

The idea is to be able to compare what’s possible with exactly the same starting point, in terms of composition and jamming.

PS : I’m new here. So, I hope this type of battle fits the spirit of the forum, if not, let me know!

Some quick thoughts:

You’d be surprised how many people on this forum do not currently own any elektron gear. You may want to reconsider the inclusion of other makers if you wish to find sufficient participants.

Also your objective is a bit unclear.

Are you limiting this to samplers?

you might want to be more flexible about the length. 40 bars is a numerically plausible but a bit awkward.

determined by the above criteria or everyone is playing the same loop?

if I arrange a 16 bar 160bpm loop into a sequence of 8 bars at 80bpm my 160bpm loop is now effectively still 16 bars when played at 80bpm, is this what the rule is intended to inspire? If not, you may want to consider something more specific in the regulations otherwise some clever person will have a lot more variety in their 8 bars than some others.

My idea was to be able to draw inspiration from what the participants do on the Elektron sequencer. I had imagined that there were a lot of Elektron users here!

Yes!

Alright, we can adjust that. Maybe 40 bars to 64 bars.

One fix tempo, 128 steps.

With all this, I’d better rename this : Elektron Sampler Loop Jam Battle.

Yes, I think it’s best to be specific, especially if it’s limited to sampling since only a very few elektron devices can then participate.

The only other thing I’d say is that with this narrow participation criteria, you may need to make the final submission date a bit longer than normal battles / mission briefs.

Otherwise sounds good, have fun!

I’d join, but I am one of the many who owns no Elektron boxes.

Happy to do something on a Polyend Tracker.

Hmm, DT II vs DT would be unfair? 16 Audio Tracks vs 8 Audio Tracks.

Do it live. Live is unfair.

I have kids, a job, a life and do legal drugs whilst making beats! Come join us over here:

It depends. Minimalism is great!!

You can still be Minimal with 16 Tracks but with less work.

Sure, but you can also spread yourself too thin and overload your tracks unnecessarily.

Maybe the next one !

These battles are very cool, but they’re a lot of work!!!
I’m still a little slow on my digitakt.

Thanks for the advice. I’ll expand the battle to all devices and create a thread with the specific rules.

A practical question: what would be the easiest way to share the sample selection for the battle?

It depends on how many samples and how you want to share them. Some people upload to google drive, some will just upload the files in the mission post using the small upload icon.

It also depends on whether or not users are submitting samples or if you are providing all of them.

You could use dropbox or any format, just depends on the file size(s). Elektronauts forum can’t upload any file over 10mb each, so if it’s wav files, it depends on the length.

and no problem, I just want to see your challenge be successful. It’s very sad when you see a good challenge and only one or two entries come in. Would be better to aim for success, I think.

This should be done off-site and only linked from Elektronauts
