I don’t really have a problem with keeping any of this in mind, I don’t think Jukka was trying to hard sell it.
To be fair to them, they’ve been pretty transparent about supply chain issues with the synth. Unfortunately they had to change a major component (the display) which has required them to re-factor a large part of the hardware and software as a result.
Because of that, rather than sitting around waiting for those issues to resolve, they’ve continued development on the loom as is it’s a natural extension of the work they’ve done on the ribbon controller for the synth.
These things are undoubtably frustrating for backers (I’ve been on my fair share of delayed Kickstarters too…) but I do think they’ve been pretty open about the issues, and it’s really not knocked my confidence in pre-ordering the Looom.
Yes I hope it will deliver in the time-frame they’re aiming for, but this ain’t my first rodeo, and if it’s delayed a bit I’ll just put that down to the nature of crowdfunding.
Looking forward to it all the same
Granted. But I’m not super interested in being fair to them. I’m more interested in being fair to the ’Naut whose thread we busted into to spread the gospel of a product that hasn’t delivered yet.
Maybe it will deliver in July? And maybe it will meet everyone’s high expectations for it? I hope so — I backed a Looom after all! But to be fair, we should include all this information about it, the good and the bad.
Or, you know, just wait until it ships to start hyping it.
Err, but this is the Loom thread. I’m just responding to comments in here, I’ve not posted in any other thread about it…
And I’m only responding to the post I originally replied to, linked to here from the ContinuuMini thread. Both these things can be true, just as there is both the optimist and pessimist case for Loom delivery and capability.
Until it actually ships and we know for sure, seems fair that both takes should be represented here. I think you’re doing an admirable job expressing one of them. I’m expressing the other. This seems unexceptional to me.
I don’t think anyone’s being outlandish here, and I get what you’re saying, just that it’s better say “hey this could be what you’re looking for when everyone has in-hand…”
Crowdfunding has always been a tetchy deal for backers and have only gotten hairier in the current climate. My best experiences are with people who are legitimately 99% of the way there and need to get manufacturing. If someone’s not sure what they want, as much as additional “backers” may help that last mile, sometimes no amount of backers can help, sometimes even too much pressure to scale can kill a project (though this one seems fairly reasonable in scope.)
It’s hard to know what’s going on behind the scenes and well, yeah I’ve backed a 3 octave Loom as well so I’m hoping my support goes well for all parties
One 'naut is excited about potential, another has preferences for framing endorsement to make sure people weren’t being overpromised before it’s out and we know the build quality, both understandable.
Also understandable that we’re having this conversation since threads for crowdfunding have a LOT of dead air in between updates and people like to fill the void…
update from Aodyo:
Last month we were confident production would start at the beginning of the month, but we couldn’t reach an agreement with our main manufacturer to get the boards produced in time within our allotted budget. Unfortunately, we have no choice but to delay shipping to this fall. We understand this is disappointing news in a project that had been mostly going smoothly so far, and we hope the inconvenience will not shake your trust in our commitment.
That’s really disappointing.
I see also in their update that they are giving everyone who pledged for the Loom a free copy of Anyma V, which is a virtual version of a polyphonic ( mono timbral ) version of their Anyma Phi synth.
was that about Loom, Omega or both?
The email I got only concerned Loom.
Aodyo gave two updates today, one on Loom and the other on Omega. They are separate. Both can be read at the separate KS pages.
I wonder what new product they’ll kickstart while waiting for Loom manufacturing issues to resolve?
I don’t know, but my first attempt to use the Anyma V demo is…not good. Can’t make the thing make a single sound or recognize my MIDI controllers, and it’s not showing up in Logic Pro as a VST. My laptop is pretty beefy, but just running the demo in standalone mode is making the whole computer seize up for seconds at a time. If this is meant to reassure backers, I hope it’s working better for others than it is for me.
If that stack gets any bigger my cynicism is going to match or exceed yours
Judging from the complaints in the Anyma Omega thread, it seems the plugin just doesn’t work on macs. I imagine an update will be forthcoming, but yeah. Not a good look.
As the guy who wrote the comment in that thread, I would just like to add that I do indeed own and use both the Linnstrument and the Continuumini but I don’t intend to get the Loom The time will (hopefully) come for Loom to show what it can do.
Given the price of any MPE controller or MPE synth, it is always best to assess its limitations vs your use case before buying because having to sell one afterwards means addressing the sale to a niche group of potential buyers.
Yeah, I totally get wanting to not sit out on bad news, wanting customers to feel like progress is being made, and the desire to engage with user feedback when fabrication has shit the bed, but when one aspect of development has encountered issues, probably best to have waited a bit more for plugin stability to share with us.
Good thing we’re not doing kernel drivers…
More seriously, this bug didn’t crop up on any of our development machines, it seems to affect users from various OS versions and across platforms (although more on Macs, which we work on), but not everyone.
I’m currently testing a fix which seems to work well, and I’ll release an update very soon.
You probably found this already, but just in case it’s a weird OS/platform mismatch, auvaltool
crashes for me with a:
libc++abi: terminating due to uncaught exception of type std::out_of_range: basic_string
This is an M3 Pro running macOS 14.5 (23F79)
Anyma V v1.2.1 is out and fixes the crashing, sound and activation bugs many reported from the initial version:
