I think the ability to quickly switch between various modes in performance will be one of this controllers strengths.

I know a few other controllers can do it, but polyphonic ribbon control is an interesting way to control a synth.

Interesting talk on SonicTalk on the Loom with Nick, Gaz, Steve Hillier, and Richard Nicol. Discussion both on the Loom and the concept and process of alternate controllers.
I want to point out, toward the end they talk about how good it would be to have this attached together with a traditional regular keyboard, missing entirely that this is where this controller came from with the Omega, and where this combination, and all the rest of this collection of controls, will be available.
Good discussion, and creative ideas from these four. Sounds like a few might back it, and they panicked thinking it had sold out.
The title on this SonicTalk episode “Non-Transferable Skills”, actually comes from the idea of learning the new skills on the various bespoke interfaces.
The Kickstarter is down to the last few hours, but i will point out, the high likelihood, that this will immediately flip over to Indiegogo – Aodyo has done that regularly in the past.

Looking forward to hearing what’s up. Some detail with the Arp function is still to be revealed.
We won’t be at the Synthfest and Superbooth but focussed on Loom and Omega for the next months.

Backers no doubt know this already.
Aodyo is making a hardware improvement with the Action Zone on the Loom.
They are widening the Action Zone area slightly, which allows the sensing of X-axis motion, in addition to the already specified pressure sensing Z dimension.
This will result in a redesign of the appearance on the left side, in particular changing the logo. This change will be shown in June.
This will fit when using the Loom like an Ondes Martenot, but also should improve playing combinations with the other ribbon modes as well.
They also report being on schedule, and moving ahead with development.

I notice in the June 18th update, which is mainly about how close they are to manufacture, also includes some images of the redesigned front panel.
On top of the simplification on the left also notice that the label on lower left button has changed from “ARP” to “WEAVE”. I am guessing this more accurately describes this function across various modes.
It will be interesting to see what it is all like with the completed firmware.

My opinion : You should look very closely at a Loom instead, combined with your favorite MPE software and hardware synths. When all is said and done you’ll have a more flexible system that better matches your tastes and is less expensive ( especially if you already have an MPE synth you like ). Plus Loom is a polyphonic controller.
Just as a for instance combine the Loom 24 with a Hydrasynth Explorer. That will have a complete versatile polyphonic synth, with a regular keyboard, plus all the different controller modes of the Loom for a total of $880 USD. The Explorer is fun to sound design with MPE and the Loom will work well with it.
Or how about the Loom with Arturia Pigments ? ( $480 USD if you have a computer already. ) You can’t get a lot better for sound design.

Considering no one has touched a Loom yet, this seems rather premature. The ContinuuMini is currently infinitely more capable than the Loom given it exists and the Loom does not.

If you want only the controller, use the same budget to get a Linnstrument.
I think that’d be a reasonable thing to suggest. Something like “There’s a kickstarter for a new ribbon-like controller called the Loom that’s supposed to deliver in July, so you may want to wait and see how that turns out. But also the company doing it has another kickstarter that’s 8 months behind in delivering, so grain of salt” seems fair.
That’s very different from if I were to say, for example, “In response to your question about the Haken products and the current state of the ContinuuMini, a Loom would be much better in every way.”
The comment I replied to was much closer to the latter than the former, IMHO.
If there is someone with hands-on experience with a ContinuuMini and a Loom, I think they should absolutely post their perspectives and opinions of it just as that comment did about the Linnstrument.
But there aren’t any, because there’s no Loom yet.
I think so. Check my math:
- To compare capability of a device 𝐴 over that of another device 𝐵, we’d take 𝐴/𝐵
- Loom, not existing, has a capability of zero.
- Any positive number over zero is infinity
- Therefore capability of the ConinuuMini (or any gear that exists) to Loom is ℝ>0/0, which is always infinity.
