Personally, if you’ve felt the high frequency ribbon tech was a bit harsh to your ears, I wouldn’t mess with Adam. I know a lot of people really appreciate their speakers and specifically that ribbon design, me personally i find it super harsh and fatiguing. Everyone hears differently, so I know this is personal, just mentioning this because you wrote earlier that you found the highs harsh/fatiguing. I’d say trust that.
well, tbh i haven’t had difficulty with them during my 8 years of a7x use. BUT! I wasn’t as aware of my body/hearing back then and I can imagine there being some better options for my ears.
After getting tinnitus/panic attack in my early 20’s. I did always tend to mix darker on the adam’s
LOVE the textures in this! Well done! (And not dark at all to my ears!)
Thanks you so much for the kind words:)
Btw, I did and extensive listening session with a friend of mine this week. He bought Lyd 48’s and wanted to test them against a77h in the shop.
We tested, A77H, Lyd 48, A7V, Kh120, KH310, Kali in8 and a few other monitors they had set up. But we mostly listened to these. I was underwhelmed by the A77H, so much bass! I had to turn the bass down which made them a bit better. A7v’s sounded good, but both Adams sounded too “forced” and did not let enough air/space in the mix. The lyd48’s were my favourite even though I found them a bit bright or harsh I feel I could listen to them all day. The kh120’s were again stunning, I’d like a pair in the future as reference monitors. The Kali’s were a bit mellow, modest even they did not excite me that much. However they did manage to translate the entire spectrum. The highs seems a bit swallowed, which would actually be a bonus as I always mix my high to low and my lows to loud. What I found most interesting is that my tunes sounded best on 2 way monitors, once you played them on 3 way monitors my subs were all flappy and over the place.
I bought 2 b-stock kali’s, one without box and one with a scratch for a total of 560,- euro including some weird insurance I got with lets me test them 60 days instead of 30.
AS I’m starting my studio from scratch I think the Kali’s with a quality headphone will be more than enough to get me started in the new space, from there I can slowly take my time to upgrade and try out which monitors work best for me in the coming years.
