Not hardware, but since you’re using samples anyway: Decimort 2 is an amazing plugin for adding character to all types of sources. Makes things nice and dirty.
I like using pedals that have CV ins and outs to give a lot more modulation possibilities. The Dreadbox Kinematic Compressor/Envelope Filter with 2 CV ins and 1 out is great. The Fairfield Circuitry Long Life parametric EQ too with 2 CV ins is super useful. Connecting the Kinematic to the Fairfield with CV is a blast. Both are mono but that’s ok. I don’t like everything in stereo anyway.

But you know what I use even more than any of those options?? Izotope Trash 2. It is the only plugin I’ve found that oozes character.
