Yeah, a lot of “vintage” multitrackers were able to sync to MIDI (including start/stop accordingly):
You can find those machines pretty cheap nowadays, but sometimes they need some repairs, so your mileage may vary. Some machines still offer good effects (mostly dynamics, EQ, e.g. the Yamaha), but data interaction (loading, saving etc.) is pretty clunky compared to current hardware (i.e. none have SD-card or fast USB for file transfer etc.). But still, for what they offer, those vintage machines might be an alternative.
