It’s cheap and a few of my mates use these to sequence their gear, might definitely be something to put into consideration. Not sure about the pad quality though (since it’s neither AKAI nor NI). Not too concerned about the sequencer part - guess the OT covers that ground on an “industry standard” level.

The pads seem fine to me, but of course you should always try to get some hands-on time with pads to see how they suit you.
The nice thing about the sequencer is you can use it in addition to the internal sequencers, so you can have real-time control of two sequences at the same time. You should also be able to trig tracks (and recorders etc.) from the Beatstep, which opens up a lot of performance possibilities if that’s the kind of thing you might find useful - depends on how you use the OT.
The sequencer in the Beatstep certainly can’t compete with the OT’s own sequencer, but it does offer some additional control options.
But if drumming is the main goal, I expect there are more suitable options.
I starting by MachineDrum then i go to Machinedrum UW. And i really love it. Very Fast i take Analog Four, Octatrack and Analog Rytm when it’s released in music shop. Then i go to Monomachine. I learned everything and i’m not convince by the Synth Part (For me it’s very subjective) and my judgment was in quality / price / possibility / workflow / music style / Live act
Finally i sold the Machinedrum UW, A4 and Monomachine.
I keep (of course) Octatrack and Analog Rhytm which is for me the perfect duo (really need this two boxes)
For the synth part i go to TT303 (with distortion pedal), Waldorf Blofeld (for synth purpose) and Pulse 2 (bass purpose)
I buy a roland HP20 because i really like to play percussion. a SPD-SX for Hihats and Ride, bell etc… I pay attention to playability and feeling of a real intsrument when i composing music.
I will buy a second drumbar (Tanzbar or Jomox 888 or 999 but i’m not choose for now)
I have Maschine Studio (and i design also synth on my workstation because there’s plugins i find interesting and fine sounding… then i go on the octatrack or hpd20
I have a small sound craft mixer to plug when i practice without computer.
I have a SYNCGEN II pro to help with SYNC for Studio and Live purpose.
Computer, MOTU 828x, Focal CMS50 + CMS Sub, JBL EON 315 for a bigger sound system and feel better the building of the track.
I’m very happy with this configuration…
I use Ableton Rewired with Reason and i use whatever i like for both world as analog or digital. FACT is if i like the sound i use it !

A nice (albeit crowded) config, I suppose, but it beats my two main assumptions: unplugging myself from the computer and having 1 machine to handle a wide variety of synth sound sculpting
