Livesetup with only AR

Hi folks,

I’m have one project with 9 nice techno songs in my AR. Since I love the Scene and Perf functions on it I want to bring this in a liveset. But there is no smooth pattern crossfading function on the AR.

At home I DO have Ableton Live (laptop) and the Ableton PUSH. MAybee I can work with TRAKTOR or something simular. I had an octatrack but sold it. Do any of you gus want to do the same without play other tracks/samples with Live/Traktor that are premade.

If yes, how do you go to work? Do you resample a part of and then blend it with a new pattern coming from the AR? Sounds unpleasend to work this way. Other Options?

One thing not mentioned much is the use of a syncable looper. A Pigtronix infinity looper or the forthcoming Roland Scooper are two of the more affordable solutions.

Or a Kaoss Pad 3. My transition tool of choice for nearly a decade. Easy to use, matches the AR pretty well aesthetically and audiences love them.

how? Is live looping possible with the KP3?

I always think I need a separate EQ or Filter for the looper and for the Rytm (or other live input)

Ah yes.
How’s the sync on that? Tap tempo or Auto-Bpm, yes? I’ve heard mixed reports on how solid the sync is when looping.
Can the loop hold sync for say, 32 bars?

Once you recorded the loop, how do you go from one track to the other? I don’t see a mixer, only one channeL, cant Find video’s showing this…
The transition trick is the only thing i miss from my octatrack… An alternative would be nice

You would have the KP3 last in your effects chain. Record a loop at the end of your song, which starts looping automatically by default. Load your new song on the AR while the old one is looping on the KP3. You could use the effects on the KP3 to transition drastically, or just use the fader to fade out the loop. there is also an input knob if you want to fade in your AR. as for syncing, you’ll just have to start the AR at the right point. KP3 has sync issues over long peroids of time, but it’s not like you’ll be keeping them in sync for long periods of time, I would imagine.
I love having the KP3 in my live setup because the effects are so immediate. The looper is just awesome icing on the cake. I’ve actually performed entire live sets just resampling the loops and manging them with the onboard effects without using any input except the initial input.

i wonder what is gonna happen, just bought a second hand KP3 for a good price, so if the experiment fails, I can sell it for more if I want to. I love to have a rev. and delay as a master again… I hope the looping transition will work as I want it to do. Thanks for the suggestions!

Y U no make transitional patterns to the AR instead? That’s how I’d do it if I were to only use the AR for a live gig…

I had a KP3 once and the stutter effect made a annoying click :(.
In Ableton Live I have made a project where I record the loop and switch over to that channel once the loop plays. Works quite well. Only thing I have to decide is if I work with a crossfader (A/B channel) or with just the volume faders.

If the transitional elements are sample based, you could use sample chains in conjunction with scenes to make the transition patterns more flexible. The scene parameter locks could contain sample start/end data that to allow for several different transitions, all within a single transitional pattern. The pattern of notes would be the same for each transition, but the sounds would be different and applicable to each transition.

For instance, in your transition pattern…
No Scene = Transition 1–>2
Scene 1 = Transition 2–>3
Scene 2 = Transition 3–>1
Scene 3 = Transition 4–>2

etc, etc.

Yes. Most solutions that involve using only the Rytm to transition inside of itself are.

I think the simplest, and perhaps lowest cost solution is a small drum machine/sampler for transition beats to run into Rytm’s external input/compressor.
I used a Volca Sample for this purpose for a while. It did the job. The EQ and mutes on the VS made mixing and layering very smooth. Though Volca output is very low, so it required a small $40 mixer to amplify the signal going into the Rytm.

i am playing with it for only 30 minutes. The song transition works very well, the fx are a little weird, but that will be fine soon.

was checking some simple solutions myself and thinking something like the RC-505 would work good…but i think ableton (looper) would work real well too once overbridge is released, so i am waiting to try that first. you should keep a couple pads on the same sound / sample though, or use some perf fx to switch over (read that can work, probably in that link up there).

oh yeah, korg electribe sampler coming soon / now. need to test it first though.

it’s a bit of a problem, switching kits / patterns…but there is always a solution. need to test it more myself. still in the studio these days.
