Live/workflow question for OT

still trying to choose the right Elektron (my first), but it’s so hard b/c i love what they all do.

i’ll confess, the Octatrack is the most intimidating so far. some of the tutorial videos would probably take several viewings for me to even get a handle on what’s going on.

still, the machine appeals to me because i love chopping up samples of all sorts and fusing them into something new. for songs i’ve pretty much completed using Reason, i’m wondering:

would it simply be a matter of loading all the tracks in a Reason song into the OT as .wav files and then just playing them all at one time ? does anyone do this ?

i’m trying to build an “all-hardware” setup, but some the stuff i’ve made in Reason is begging to be used in a live capacity. i don’t think i’d run out of space too quickly or anything, but since the OT looks like such a high mountain to climb i want a grip on what it can do for me at the moment…

The octatrack is not that hard. I created a simple liveset which was fun to play on the same day I got the OT, and I’m no genius
Especially for the purpose you describe. Live (re)sampling can be a bit tricky but playing back samples and mangling them is very easy.

The Octatrack is lot easier to understand once you get to try it hands on. Although some parts of the manual are very confusing, there are several very, very good tutorial videos and trick videos up on Youtube you should check out. Just do a search for “octatrack tutorial” on Youtube.

Also, be sure to check out Merlin’s excellent OT guide.

re porting your reason tracks have a look at this thread. the post i made there was written with ableton in mind but it’ll point you in the right direction…

another thumbs up for merlin’s guide it fills in a lot of holes that are left by the manual, which goes into the hows but rarely the whys of the OT’s functionality. i read the manual 4 times cover to cover in the first months of ownership but that guide provided many aha momenta - it really worked like a cypher key for me
