Live Recording Mode - Key feature left out?

Hello everyone. I am having an issue regarding the use of Live-Record mode on the Elektron Rytm MK2.

In short, I purchased the Rytm in order to compose songs in song mode to avoid using my laptop to trigger the voices via MIDI. Moreover, I was never (strong word, I know) planning on using the regular ol’ Step-Recording mode with the Trigs and 16-steps to compose songs manually because that’s just too everyday’ish. No, jk. :- )

My question is for the seasoned vets out there:

How can I set myself up to Live-Record the MIDI patterns I have composed on my DAW? They must start at the 1st trig, not on any other step, because that’ll throw off the arrangement - making song mode on the Rytm MK2 useless (for me at least).

This should be as easy as hitting rec, play, play… but it isn’t! The sequencer starts as soon as one enters Live-Record mode, and I don’t want that to happen! Transport messages are set on the Rytm, but the key combination to enter Live-Record mode start the sequencer. What makes more sense is to have the key combination arm the sequencer, getting it ready for when the first pad hit.

I may get banned for being rude, but I need help!

In all seriousness though, Live-Recording the patterns I have composed in my DAW is the main thing I was trying to achieve when making the deci$ion to purchase the Rytm MK2.

Please let know that this is possible with a simple key combination.

That’s kind of a weird way to do it, but ok. Are you sending clock from the DAW to the RYTM? If yes, can’t you enable Live Rec on the RYTM, hit stop in your DAW (to stop the RYTM), then when you hit Play in your DAW your RYTM should still be in Live Rec Mode and be synced to your DAW.

What about slaving the daw to the AR? Then when you start Live record the midi notes will send?

What about a dummy / empty pattern?
Play with the DAW, AR plays > activate Live Rec after.

When I hit stop, it automatically exits Live Recording Mode. There is no way to get around this feature.

It’s a drag, I thought I had it made after reading that the Rytm receives Transport messages via MIDI (Run/Stop). Naturally, I assumed that this would carry over to Starting and Stopping the sequencer while in Live Recording Mode.

It is strange - Live Recording stops when you hit stop in your DAW, but it doesn’t exist when you’re in Step Recording Mode.

When I hit stop in Ableton, it looks like Live Rec is off… but when I hit Play in Ableton, it comes back on (red flashing light)

The Rytm sends MIDI Clock, but DAWs only get synced to MIDI Time Code (MTC).

Ah. Bummer.

I confirm this behaviour with an Octatrack as master. Should work.

A bit more complicated but in song mode, AR receives Song Pointer Position, allowing you to start recording on any step position.

Thanks for the info on the dummy/empty pattern technique. Although it did work, the incoming MIDI notes I was sending to the Rytm got MicroTimed automatically.

I sent a sequence via Logic Pro X to the Rytm, but the HH tracks sounded shuffled - cheesy shuffled. Turns out that although the Rytm MK2 can record external MIDI notes, they will get rearranged automatically.

Shoot, I really wanted the Rytm MK2 to act like an mp3 player… turn it on, listen to a lengthy jam, then edit it to my liking - all while on the go, without a laptop.

Btw, I’ve been going deep with the Rytm and discovered some bugs. As it stands now, I will be returning it. I’m not sure whether or not to purchase another… since Live Recording Mode is not what I thought it was.

Anyways, I put together a jam in Logic Pro, then sent it to the Rytm. It sounded cheesy, so I cleared all patterns and decided to trigger it using MIDI instead. Here’s a video, with issues/bugs and all:
