Live & Indirect Sessions at Repeater Radio: Ye Gods - 31 March 2024

This is equally great (and also quite relaxing in its own way too).

Edit: Thanks to Noodle Twister and No Masters - what a great pairing of contrasting yet complimentary sessions that was too.

Sorry, not even going to make that joke again. Didn’t get chance to listen, but will try and catch up.

Tomorrow sees the start of the 2023 series of Live and Indirect sessions at Repeater Radio, with Drift of Signifieds material from 2022 reconfigured through too many effects into (Ignatius) Lynchian soundscapes. Expect backmasking, Bella Ciao, spurious breakbeats, rejigged ghost story readings by Al Robertson, and the black chicken in dub.

Everything commences at 20:00 UTC and the Discord lounge is open to all.

Update: now archived:

This fortnight’s Live and Indirect Eternal Atonal session at Repeater Radio (22 January at 20:00 GMT / UTC) is a Drift of Signifieds livestream from July 2020, expanded, enhanced and revisited as a radio edit for when the nights grow longer.

Please do not drive or operate heavy machinery while listening to this session.

The orignal livestream is also archived here: Drift of Signifieds - Eternal Atonal livestream - YouTube

Sometime in the 2000s, the combined members of This Too Shall Pass and Drift of Signifieds gathered for a collective exploration of sound and space in two parts. The results were recorded to 4-track cassette, copied to CDR and archived in a damp basement in north London for nearly two decades. Now they are back… on air at 20:00 UTC on Repeater Radio on Sunday 5 March 2023 - Live and Indirect from Blackstock Road.

Update: the archive is now live:

SkyGas will be Live and Indirect from Rainier Beach at 20:00 UTC on Sunday 19 March 2023 at Repeater Radio:

SkyGas is the new project of Seattle’s Ian Price, recently releasing a debut full-length album. After a handful of blissful and dense dance music releases as Naturebot over the past two decades, SkyGas focuses on stretching out chaotic and otherworldly points of inflection to the horizon with the use of homemade and outdated electronics.

The Live and Indirect session on Sunday 2 April 2023 at 20:00 UTC+1 / BST features the return of Noodle Twister for a full-length set:

A series of varied frequencies mostly made for ‘Jamuary’ (in a day) with some recent new additions. Abstract sounds, drones, and modular experiments with occasional beats against a sonic backdrop of ambient darkness. Distress beacons, noise and rays of hope from distant stars.

Produced in the studio in the United Kingdom 2023.

Some of the instruments used in no particular order were-

Monome Norns. RF Nomad ‘shortwave’ radio. SDR play radio receiver. RYK Vector wave. Monome Teletype. Cassette dictaphone recordings. Make Noise Morphagene and other modules. Bespoke synth for capturing jams and for the example ‘Arp’ in one track.

After a short hiatus while Repeater Radio regrouped for a soft relaunch, the Live and Indirect sessions return on 25 June 2023, featuring Hákarl with Drift of Signifieds, Greta Pistaceci and Rackets: The Crayons for Gaps Session

Hákarl is the solo project of Kev Nickells - musician / writer / programmer / other of Brighton, UK. Thanks to a natter with Matt of MC Guitars, he recently acquired a fretless guitar. Thanks to scratching a scabby itch, he also recently acquired a digital tanpura. Thanks to insufficient cables, he would record music in concert with the tanpur but leave no drone on the recordings. Therefore, this session is the result of inviting some fine electronic musicians to colour in the missing parts - re-adding the missing drone.

This weekend’s Live and Indirect session at Repeater Radio comes from the ineffable Map 71 at 20:00 BST on Sunday 9 July 2023.

MAP 71 are
Lisa Jayne (vocals, lyrics, tambourine)
and Andy Pyne (drums, percussion, electronics)

Formed in Brighton, UK in 2013, they are purveyors of hypnotic rhythms and provocative words.

Their new album Blood Fruit is out now, about which it has been written:

… feels like a wonderfully crazy disjointed track that would have people leaping around at a free festival; it’s out there, but also feels a little confrontational. “Full Body Ghost” has an odd DX-7-type synth sound, with lyrics that conjure up an almost Weimar nightclub atmosphere. Synth notes tumble around, giving the song a strange feeling where there are disturbing things hiding in the shadows.

The second part of this Sunday’s session will be an indirect revisitation of the live Drift of Signifieds Drone Day 2023 recording, reworked in hopefully subtle ways for the slightly different context of a radio transmission.

And do pop by the Discord chatroom too.

Update - and here are the archives for further listening:

This Sunday’s Live and Indirect session is a selection of hardware jams from the studio sessions for Photophobik’s new eponymous second album from this Ekoplekz side project, which is released on cassette with an extra 7" inch lathe-cut vinyl by Preston Capes (experimental sister label of Woodford Halse).

i’ve had the pleasure of meeting and corresponding with Nick Ekoplekz a number of times over the years, even back when he was a humble dubstep blogger by the name of Gutterbreakz and owned no synths. he actually turned up to support the only live performance i’ve ever done - 15 minutes of Octatrack garbage at an EMOM event - he is one of the nicest men in electronic music, not just that, one of the most fascinating and inventive who has really carved out his own style and aesthetic. this will be good listening and i commend it to you all
