Some months ago I was invited to play an improvised jam with some great musicians in a very nice studio. So this is how it sounds when I use the Octatrack with a live drummer, bass, guitar, and keyboards. It was so much fun. Not the best with names but there was Jason W on bass, Pogo on keyboard, Matt?/Mark? with the guitar, and this amazing drummer…
this is gorgeous.
how did you and the keyboard and guitar player approach understanding your space/opportunity?
Quite enjoying this.
Also curious about what you were doing … processing others’ sound outputs through the OT? Live sampling and resequencing? etc.
sweeeeeet! very nice ! — how did the dj battle go (my little brony ? )
We warmed up for about ten minutes. During that time I really got the feel of who was covering what range. I loaded up a group of sliced samples from the musical South Pacific. At the last possible moment, the lead guy said that I should cover rhythm for the start of the track. So I switched gears, brought up an existing project which fit the general feel we’d warmed up with, slowed it waaaay down and hit play into the clock ticking sound. Once we were up an running I loaded a couple other tracks with the South Pacific samples and went to town.
There was no direct communication about the musical direction but it was clear that we were all on the same path. The keyboard player was actually around a corner out of my sight. To be honest I had my doubts as to how this would actually sound as a mix but I’m quite surprised to hear it the same as I recalled
This editor + Chrome = Ugh!
The battle was tough. I had no problem with the first two guys but the third was incredibly talented. He was also smart enough to bring 2/3 of the entire crowd as his crew. Mike Regal took the night and I made great new friends all around.
Also, I had two tracks where the mix was just plain out of whack. Sounds great here but on the setup they were using, not so much. Some of the tracks are up on Soundcloud on and in the bar at the bottom of this message.
this editor and chrome— i use crhome too, so it could be better? very annoying …
glad to hear you had fun at the show and made new friends… well hiring actors as your support group sure pays out for a short while!
listened to the tracks in the “profile player” at bottom of this message … s o l i d ! groovy, weird-… like it!
