Linnstrument + A4

Hello All,

Ever since the Linnstrument (L) was announced I thought it would be a great match for the A4. A friend of mine lent me one for the week and I’ve been experimenting a bit. Haven’t quite got all the settings “in sync” between the two machines but the possibilities are definitely showing themselves.

My “plan” is to be able to play one or two note (generally ambient) parts on the L and others sequenced on the A4. Has anyone else messed around with settings and documented what works and what doesn’t?

Thanks in advance!

I’m really interested in this myself. I’ve yet to pick up a Linnstrument (or other MPE enabled device), but have wanted to know for a while how the A4 could be programmed to work with it.

Thanks for starting this thread!

If anyone has any youtube video of them playing the A4 using the Linnstrument, it would be awesome if you could link it!

Hi, i´ve got both and have been messing with the obvious settings: same sound on all 4 tracks. The Linnstrument sending note per channel… then sliding like a psychedelic lap steel player, each note independent. So much fun

I blogged about it a while back. Written for people not familiar with the A4 already, so it might not be all that useful:

Thanks for linking this and for the work to write it up! The video started off slow for me, but it really did showcase just how expressive the A4 allowed you to be with your eurorack!
I’m still going over the thread. Lots to absorb, but just to cut to the chase, you were able to get the same kind of sound expression out of the A4 itself right? Not just by using the A4 as a controller medium?

Thanks for the links - especially the other thread. Good info there as well.

I had a few problems - hope to play with it some more today or tomorrow. For example, sliding would work on one note but not a second note. I’m guessing it was a settings issue. There seems to be alot of setup required to really get the two to gel but I presume once you get there you’re golden.

I like the idea of pointing the X,Y,Z axis to various performance controls. That’s a great idea!

Yeah, creating expressive A4 patches is easy and quick to do. Especially since (at least to my ears) patches sound good even when they are really simple. Basic sounds that would sound flat and unpleasant on their own come to life when your fingers start adding dynamics, vibrato, etc.

My thoughts exactly. Even a simple square or triangle sounds great when you can be expressive with it. Add in the A4s great effects and it really is just begging for a linnstrument like controller.
