'linking' AR & A4

I bought A4 and AR. A4 is still difficult, AR is not too difficult to me…

Question 1:
When I make a song, it is a combination of AR and A4. Can I connect them on such a way, that the machines understand what patterns from both machines have to be together? Like when I select a pattern on the Rytm… automatically the right pattern in A4 activates?
Still unanswered

Question 2:
Right now I have the AR audio output to the A4 Audio input. The A4 output is the master and goes to my speakers. Is this logical to you? I don’t use the compressor for the synth, and I cannot find a compressor on the A4… so I have the feeling I should do this the other way around… Any ideas?
Answered

hey there!

when i am just using the two elektron boxes with no mixer i send the signal from the AR into the A4 (the a4 does not have a compressor but i believe it sounds better this way.

if you go into the midi sync menu…on your master, scroll down and select prog ch send.

and on the slave, set prog ch receive.

not much to it when you know where to look

Tnx for the fast replay. I am sorry for asking this… But now i have set up the preferences as you said… So i have to send the message now. How do i send the message? I Can find in the manual that it is possible, but i Cannon find how.

Something i found (on page 53) wás to set the midi channels. Master (ar) has prog chn out =auto and and slave (A4) has prog chn in = auto

I think there must be a way to let the pattern on my AR send a signal to A4 to change the pattern in the A4, but how…

Really no one? Or is it just a stupid question…

In both ‘Ableton and maschine’ i send a message to change program. Here i set all preferences richt, but don’t know how to send the message…

I hope someone Can help me on this

Hi there,
The pattern change should be automatic. Just setup both maschines as already explained.
One must be the master always. When you change a pattern in the master maschine the slave maschine will change pattern as well. Good luck

unfortunately i did not succeed today,

AR ‘Clock Send’ check
AR ‘Transport Send’ check
AR ‘Program Change Send’ check

A4 ‘Clock Receive’ check
A4 ‘Transport Receive’ check
A4 ‘Program Change Receive’ check

There is a midi cable from ‘AR Midi Out Sync A’ to A4 Midi In’

When I press AR ‘play’, the A4 also starts (as expected).

But when I change the pattern on my AR, no pattern change on my A4 :frowning:

Additional information that can be part of the issue:
midi port config of AR Receive Notes & Receive CC both ‘unchecked’
I did this to avoid ‘mutes’ from AR to A4.
I did this according to this: AR > A4 mute tracks issue

AR Program Change In CH = auto
AR Program Change out CH = auto

A4 Program Change In CH = auto
A4 Program Change out CH = auto

I think this is essential for my setup, but I am looking for this way too long now. I hope someone can help me out.

Hey dude, I had planned to set up my rig the same way, and after reading your post decided to give it a shot to see if there are any problems. The master that sends the PRG change msg obviously won’t receive so don’t worry about that. I have all 5 machines linked up with AR on the very end of the chain. All machines EXCEPT for AR responded to PRG change msg. I think there’s a bug that needs fixing yet. I assure you that it DOES WORK. HOWEVER, AR is not responding no matter where I slide it in the chain. Anyone else with AR can verify this? Someone with the updated OS preferably…Thanks for pointing this out, super super crucial! One thing to note, all machines have to receive and send EXCEPT for the master. I’ve tried it with other configurations and it does not work. Of course, this only matters if you are using more than two machines. The machine at the beginning and end can either send only or receive only.

OK, I fucked up. Got the AR to change. For some reason, AUTO doesn’t do shit. Change the midi channel on AR receive to the base channel of your A4. It’s probably channel s 1-4, so try 1 first, go from there.

The only other thing I can think of is how you may have your pattern select set up.

I noticed that no matter how I have both machines set up, if I have the master set to instant jump (the setting when the green light is on) the slave pattern will not jump instantly . It just finishes out its pattern length then changes.
I have found no way around this yet. Hope this helps

P.s one last thing…

Set the ARs auto channel out to 9 and also set the a4’s auto channel to 9. (their auto channels are assigned differently!)

I’m finding that the A4 gets hung up sometimes and won’t send the change message, even though everything else might work. Had to restart twice, double-checked the settings. Would be a drag if it got hung up during a performance, eh? Thanks for bringing this up, been meaning to work this configuration out myself.

This is what did the trick. Tnx a lot… I am really happy with this. Very nice you kept on thinking with me!

Yeah… in general drum machines are set to MIDI Channel 10
